I met Howie Welsch on a dark, probably stormy night, at Capital City Distribution in 1993. I went to pick up each week’s comics shipment for my store and he worked in the warehouse. That went on about a year before my partner and I closed the store. Howie and I stayed in touch, and in 1995, he joined me at a wholesale distribution company, he as warehouse manager.
Likely my favorite Howie story is in this job, when in 1996 the company implemented a new warehouse pulling handheld computer system. He thought it was a crap system, that it slowed him down. He challenged the owner on this new efficiency: he went with the old style paper print out and the other warehouse guy used the scanner. Howie beat him, I mean a really full-out kicked his ass, not only in time but in accuracy. From that day on Howie did not have to use the scanner to pull, and he later implemented a new system: he’d pull his way with the paper, and the other dude would scan his pull. The other dude wasn’t even able to keep up with Howie in that method, and day after day a row of carts of outgoing product lined up for scanning.
Howie and I lost touch a bit after we left the wholesale company. An argument, of sorts. About 15 years or so later we ran in to one another. Quick chat, and although it wasn’t the camaraderie of what I remembered in 1996 it didn’t have the tinge of discord of 1998. It was an opening, and one I intended on returning to as I could since I had great fondness for Howie: and his perfect pop culture recall, comic lore memory, all things JOE, and so much more. But I left Virginia, lost contact, and time passed.
I last saw Howie, surprisingly but not at all a surprise with all consideration taken, in Baltimore in 2015 at a comics thing. I got his card, cell number, email. Promised myself I’d contact him, stay in touch. I never managed to do that for no good reason other than busy-ness and distance. So, today, learning of his passing…
I’m sad that I lost 20 years of contact with someone who was passionate in so many ways, and always a thrill to talk with. I’m happy to have known Howie, and that our story ended with handshake and a wishing of the best to one another. My condolences to all who have had fortune to cross wits, paths, and lives with Howie. Excelsior.

I'll miss you Howie! You left us way too soon! Tell all of those we love in Heaven that we miss them terribly. I'm sorry about Minnie Driver and the Green Bay Packers. Some things were never meant to be, no matter how much we wanted them to happen.
Mandy, Jeff and Ronni have the hardest jobs. They have to miss you the most. They have to remember the birthdays and the Hannukahs and Super Bowls without you. But, in truth, they have the best jobs. They remember all of these events having loved you the most. Until we all meet again, Howie...

I know I thought of you as a humanized version of the comic bookstore owner in The Simpson's but much more angsty and with a laugh that could kill angels, but I loved you and wanted you to be happy. You were the first person to offer me a place to live when I got out of treatment and although I never took you up on it, I respected you all the more for it. I wish I thanked you more while I had still had the chance. I love you and I'm sorry I never took the ample opportunities provided me to say so more often. I hope to make amends with you in person someday. We can be weird ghosts that touch ghost tips. You are loved.

Although I never got the pleasure of meeting Howie, my mother is good friends with Jeff (Howies brother) and if they were anything alike; which my mom said they were- I know he was one of the funniest, brightest, beautiful souls out there. This obituary is absolutely incredible and I send my greatest condolences to the family and friends of the beautiful Howard Welsch. <3

I knew Howie through one of his passions, collecting G.I.Joe. He of course had probably the best collection of 'Joe comic artwork in the world. And he was so passionate about it. He cracked me up when I met him in person at a Joe Con. Such a fun & good guy. I'll miss you Howie. My thoughts & prayers are with you and your family. God Bless buddy.

We hope that you knew how special you were to both of us. You always treated us with respect and loving-kindness. We always felt your warmth and genuineness. With this candle, we know that your memory will stay alive. There is an emptiness in our hearts, and we can't begin to imagine the sadness endured by your family. I may not have known Howie long, nor half as well as I wanted to, but he touched my life and made it all the better. He was weird, he was strange, and he was all Howie. Amazing cat pictures were shared at random hours, many inappropriate jokes shared, and even more amazing meals eaten together. My life was better because of Howie. I will never cease to miss you, buddy.
