Obituary of Daphne Elaine Maillard
Daphne Elaine Maillard was born on February 16, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Luther and Lillian Barbour.
Affectionately known as “Dee” and “Gran,” Daphne spent her earliest years in Brooklyn, New York with her family. She graduated from Clara Barton High School for Health Professions and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Sydenham Hospital in Harlem, New York from 1945-1950.
On May 3, 1947, Daphne was united in marriage to the late Thomas Edward Wallace. From this union, their son, Wayne Edward Wallace, was born.
Daphne took time away from her nursing career to raise her son, Wayne. She also cared for children in her neighborhood.
Daphne was employed as a mortgage/insurance broker at The Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn from 1970 until her retirement in 1986.
On September 27, 1975, Daphne and the late Fitzgerald “Fitz” Emmanuel Maillard were joined together in marriage. She welcomed his four children, Diane Broadwater, Michael, Barbara and Martin Maillard, into her family.
Daphne loved music and was known to sing. She was an active member of the choir at St. Leonard’s Church in Brooklyn, New York. Daphne enjoyed traveling with her husband, Fitz, cousin Leone Lynch and closest friend, Isolene Forde. She loved to entertain and spend time with her family and friends. She was known to be the first and the last on the dance floor at any family function and love to learn the latest dances.
Daphne loved puzzles of all kinds, crocheting, knitting and reading. She also had a love for children. She often volunteered at local schools in Northern Virginia and read to the children who knew her as “Grandma Wallace.”
Above all, her love for her family was always a priority. Daphne was a devoted wife, loving mother, beloved grandmother, and loyal friend. Her love for others extended beyond her family as she adopted many children and grandchildren in her lifetime. She will forever be remembered for her style, grace and sweet disposition.
