Obituary of Burt Charles Hawkins

Burt Charles Hawkins died on 3/27/2017 from surgical complications due to an injury to his leg and hip. He was born on 9/15/1937 in Buffalo, N.Y. He is the son of Ralph Charles and Irma Ada Hawkins, nee Rowley. He grew up in Gowanda, N. Y., attended the University of Rochester in N.Y., and graduated with a B.A. After three years of graduate studies at Duke University, he joined the Army. He volunteered for the Infantry. He was sent to Germany in 1962 and was a court marshal clerk. During his service he helped GIs obtain their GEDs. He met his wife Maria in Giessen, Germany. They were married for 53 years. He is survived by his wife, daughter Victoria Brombacher, (husband Markus, children Kira, Lukas, and Anja), son George Hawkins (wife Erica and children Anna and Eli), and son Thomas Hawkins (wife Julie, children Evelyn, Owen, Brenna, and Madeline), his twin brother Brett Sr. Hawkins, (wife Linda and nephew Brett Jr.). Burt Hawkins had a fulfilling government career and retired in 1996 from APHIS/USDA. He worked in the administration of the screwworm eradication program. He was a founding member of Holy Trinity Orthodox Parish, OCA, now located in Ashburn, VA. During his career he traveled many times to Mexico. In his retirement he volunteered as much as he could as an ESL teacher to adult immigrants. He helped them find their first employment, obtain driver’s licenses and citizenship. Funeral services will be on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, 20937 Ashburn Rd. Suite 110, Ashburn, VA 20147. Final resting place will be Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
