Obituary of George Whately Hager

Having suffered the ravages of ALS for the past sixteen months, George Whately Hager (69) of Herndon, Virginia succumbed peacefully on April 7, 2017 at Future Care Pineview Nursing Home in Clinton, Maryland. Mr Hager was born in Morristown, New Jersey on September 3, 1947 to Willis W. and Mary (Rich) Hager and lived with his family in rural western NJ receiving a diploma from Hunterdon Central High School in 1965. After graduating from Roanoke College with a BA in Psychology, George entered the US Navy where he provided direct support as a cryptologic officer to air, surface and submarine operations in Asia, Europe and at the National Security Agency until 1992. Settling in Northern Virginia following his naval career, George took up country swing dancing and became an active member of this community in the DC area. He also obtained certification in Microsoft networking and was awarded an MBA from George Mason University. George was also active in the McLean Bible Church. Mr Hager founded and became the sole proprietor of real estate investing, vending and forestry businesses, which he operated until his death. He continued a walnut woodlot forestry project he had begun in Illinois and added to it with a forestry woodlot in Loudoun County. He also invested in rental properties and operated a vending machine route under the auspices of the National Federation for the Blind. Funeral arrangements have been made by the Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, though services will be postponed pending internment at Arlington National Cemetery, where he will receive full military honors. He is predeceased by his parents Willis and Mary Hager and leaves behind sister, Betsy of Newtown, PA; brother Joe (Faye) of Lebanon, Ohio; nephew Aric ; nieces Kirsten (Andrew) and Anneke (Brian); grand nephews Thomas and Cody; and grand niece Clara.
