Obituary of Joan Roe Stead

STEAD, Joan Sybil Roe, passed away peacefully on April 18th, 2017 at the age of 86. She was married to D. Roemer Stead in February 1953 in Lombard, IL. They raised their family in Stamford, CT, later moving to Fairfax, VA. They had retired to Midlothian, VA until her husbands death in 1994. She had 5 children Leslie Croson, Laura Stead, Clayton Stead, Douglas Stead (deceased) and Terri Umphlett. Joan also had 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Joan came from a large family and had one brother, Tannie (deceased) and 5 sisters, Mable, Dorma, Annie Maude, Geraldine and June (all deceased). She leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Joan started a career in entertainment as a singer, professional name was “Bonnie Joan”. She was always a great draw wherever she was booked in the 50's. She met her husband at a nightclub and after they married, her best performances were during their many gatherings and parties from the home. Joan loved to entertain. She and her husband “Ray” would often perform together and both would play the piano and sing. Their harmonies echo in the memories of all who knew them and were privileged to attend her famous parties. Joanie as many called her was always smiling and laughing. She enjoyed people and life. A private service will be held Tuesday April 25th, 2017. Following cremation Joan will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery, time and date to be TBD. The family would like to thank Joan's loyal caregivers at Loving Arms now called Shenandoah Senior Assisted Living of Front Royal, VA. They were always by her side to provide hugs and a helping hand. The family would also like to thank Optum Palliative and Hospice Care of Reston, VA, for helping to provide care and guidance especially in her final months and weeks.
