Hello,
Sadly I just found out about Sonny's passing. I worked with Sonny at DARPA in 1995-1996, in the Ultrascale Computing Program. Sonny was brilliant and a visionary. He knew exactly who to engage as researchers and got the best and most brilliant in the business: Len Adleman at USC, Seth Lloyd at MIT, Carver Mead at Caltech, George Whitesides at MIT, Tom Knight at MIT, as well as funding the first ever government-sponsored DNA computing and quantum computing projects. He was way ahead of his time. Not only did Sonny make fundamental contributions in the semiconductor industry and chip design, but he spearheaded the first government effort that tried to look way beyond Moore's Law into the future. I learned so much from him and met so many fascinating people. I will miss him. The science and technology community has lost a bright light.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Joann and the Maynard family at the passing of Sonny Maynard. Sonny was a dear friend and technical cohort of the Electronic Technology Division, Air Force Avionics Laboratory. Our relationship spanned a time from approximately 1961 to Sonny's passing. We shared many technical, philosophical, and social interests. Sonny will always be remembered as a very genuine person. We will miss him for that endearing quality.

Sonny Maynard was the greatest senior civil servant I ever had the pleasure working for. He changed the face of the world in the area of microelectronics, and we are forever grateful. He will be missed.

Sonny had a tremendous impact on U.S. military capabilities, first with microelectronics technology development and later with building a community to protect the advantage provided by that technology. As significant as his technical accomplishments were, Sonny’s greater achievement was as an inspirational leader to those who had the privilege of working for him. And, all these successes paled when compared to the love he had for his family.
Deepest condolences to the Maynard family during this difficult time. Sonny was greatly respected as a true visionary within the defense technology community. May he rest in peace.
