I just read about Professor Shiner’s passing in this issue of the Mason Spirit. I took his Religion 100 course my first semester in college. I recall him being very lively, knowledgable, and open to all discussions; he even sang a Native American song, complete with a drum! It was a fun class!
My condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and current and previous students. Teachers like that are one of a kind, make learning fun, and expand your horizons. He was a great professor and will be missed.
His passion for the field and concern for others is something that not only is now his legacy, but something everyone should strive for in their respective professions...it’s very inspiring, humbling, and makes one realize what matters in life is compassion towards others. That’s the religion of the world and what every religion believes in, despite it not happ ning in practice.
Thank you and God Bless and may his soul be in peace,
Maria Habib, GMU Alumnus, Econ ‘06, MPP ‘10

To the Family of Dr. Shiner,
My condolences and prayers. I just found out about Dr. Shiner's passing. I learned much from him at George Mason and enjoyed his passionate style of teaching. May he Rest In Peace awaiting the rest of the story of the gospel, our resurrection in Christ on the last day.

George Mason University benefited in so many ways by having Whitney Shiner on its faculty.
Whitney was an unfailingly kind and generous colleague as well as a first-rate and influential scholar. When I first arrived at GMU, he and I were assigned to share an office. At one point we must have had the Library's entire collection of Greek texts in our office; if ever I could not find something on the Library shelves, chances were it was Whitney who had checked it out, and vice versa.
One Monday when he came in to the office, I asked how his weekend had been, and Whitney chuckled and said he'd watched a single Disney movie a dozen times with his children. That captured beautifully what a lovely person he was. It's common for young children to want to watch a movie over and over again; but it is the rare parent who will gladly watch it over and over with them for a weekend.
We will all miss his smile and wonderfully droll observations as we go about our work. His quiet yet substantial presence will always be missed.

I knew Whit through the Network of Biblical Storytellers Seminar, and was impressed from the beginning with what a fine human being he was--a good scholar, but also genuine, caring, and courageous. Whit, we will miss you a lot.

Whit was a great friend, a scholar who has deeply influenced my field of studies and my own work. His illustrations of bombastic performances were memorable although he came to appreciate subtlety with the passing years. He had a huge heart, a great laugh, and didn't rush to say things that required reflection before speech. He will be deeply missed in my community.
