Obituary of Carol Elizabeth Burroughs

On Sunday, June 25, 2017, Carol E. Burroughs of Great Falls, VA beloved wife of David B. Burroughs for 67 years passed away, devoted mother of Bruce D. Burroughs and Glenn S. Burroughs, loving grandmother of Amy C., Hannah E., and Tess Marie Burroughs, and sister of Thomas C. Marshall, Ph.D. 

Born in Cleveland, OH November 15, 1928, Carol grew up in Shaker Heights, OH.  She attended Colorado Women’s College in Denver, CO as a freshman and transferred to Flora Stone Mather College of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland as a sophomore.  The following year, she transferred to The Cleveland Institute of Art and after two years of study graduated and entered the commercial art and advertising fields.  Carol was also a juried artist in oil and water color media, receiving awards at the Cleveland Museum of Art.  While attending college she freelanced as a model on television and in style shows. 

Meeting her future husband in high school in 1946 their senior year, she and Dave dated throughout their college years and were married upon their graduation in 1950.  In 1960, Carol and family moved to Pasadena, CA from Cleveland where she became active in various charities, was given a life-time appointment to the PTA, and upon invitation joined the Pasadena Assistance League where she directed a number of philanthropic events and programs.

Moving with her husband and family to Old Brookville, NY in 1973 she later attended and graduated from the New York School of Interior Design and embarked on an interior design career.  In 1981, Carol and her husband Dave moved to Northern Virginia where her paternal father’s family, the Marshalls, had originally settled in Southwest Virginia in 1635.  She continued in the interior design field, joining a firm in Chevy Chase, MD, until she retired in 1995.
