Obituary of Stephen Eustace Whitney

Stephen Eustace Whitney passed away on August 18th 2017.  Stephen was born October 25, 1928 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma.  He was raised in Oklahoma City, OK and Arlington, VA where he met his life-long love, Margaret at Mt Olivet Methodist Church in Arlington.  They graduated from Washington - Lee High School together.  He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.  He married Margaret Brown in 1948 and graduated from VPI (now Virginia Tech) in 1954.  Steve was an engineer with the U.S. Department of Defense for his career.   He enjoyed doing several “fun” jobs after his retirement.

Steve was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Vienna for many years.  He was a member of the United Methodist Men, served on the Facilities Committee, and played on the Men’s softball team.   He continued playing softball into his 70’s.  He had a passion for genealogy, reading Louis Lamour novels, playing his trumpet, following the Redskins and Nats, playing bridge and blackjack, and eating great food.

Steve was most proud of the family he created.  He loved spending time with his family; whether it was vacationing, camping, playing board games, ping pong, whiffle ball or spoons.

Steve is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret of Ashburn, VA, his two sons, Walter (spouse Elizabeth) Whitney of Los Angeles, CA and John (spouse Lesley) Whitney of Vienna, VA;  his two daughters, Kathryn (spouse Steve) Lee of Gainesville, VA and Elizabeth (spouse John) Pearce of Glen Allen, VA;  15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Judes Childrens Hospital, www.stjude.org
