Obituary of Shirley Virginia Frye

Shirley Virginia Frye, 82, of Herndon, Virginia, went to be with the Lord at 3:30 AM, Saturday, September 23, 2017.  She was born June 7, 1935 in Washington DC, to Otto Sam Gilliam and Virginia Elizabeth Gilliam, and was married to James Henry Frye Sr. for 36 wonderful years, until James’ death in 1988.

She is survived by her sisters, Carlyn Rauch and Barbara Gilliam, and was predeceased by her sister Margaret Couch.

She was blessed with four children, James Henry Frye Jr. of Fredericksburg, Virginia (now deceased), Elizabeth Frye Bishop of Herndon, Virginia, Michael Wayne Frye of Woodbridge, Virginia and Alan Ladd Frye of Nashville, Tennessee, as well as 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was a resident of Stafford, and later Spotsylvania, Virginia for many years, where she and James were farmers, marketing their vegetables at a produce stand in Fredericksburg, Virginia. They moved to the home of John and Elizabeth Bishop in Herndon, Virginia in 1987, where Shirley has resided for the past 30 years.

She loved children and was known as ‘Granny Frye’ to most of the children in the neighborhood, providing childcare services to many of them.

She loved a good mystery, spending much of her time reading mystery novels and watching mystery shows on television. She was a world-class baker; her apple pies and cinnamon rolls are legendary.

The visitation is from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at the Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, Virginia. The funeral service will follow from 12:00 PM until approximately 12:45 PM. Reverend David Moshier will be officiating.

A reception at the home of John and Elizabeth Bishop will be held after the funeral at 12025 Sugarland Valley Drive, Herndon, VA 20170.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
