Obituary of Kay Updike Schlegel

Kay Carvelle Updike Schlegel, widow of Donald Douglas Schlegel of Great Falls, VA died at Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Leesburg, VA on October 6, 2017 at the age of 81. 

Kay worked with her husband Don for 35 years in their many business’s and six years with John F. (Jack) O’Toole managing Palm Coast Lodge in FL.  Kay was born in Washington, DC and raised in Herndon, VA   She lived in Great Falls, VA until Don’s passing at which time she relocated to Palm Coast, FL  She enjoyed Church, Choir, UMW meetings, CWU meetings, art and crafts, music, traveling and visiting family and friends. 

She was a devoted and caring mother to her four children, Dianne Schlegel Capilongo (Christopher) of Leesburg, VA; Steven Edwin of Mineral, VA;  Robert Winston and Suzanne Schlegel of Leesburg, VA    Kay is also survived by John F. O’Toole fiancé of 29 years; brother Wayne M. Updike (Sharon) of Mooresville, NC; sister-in-law Alma B. Updike of Herndon, VA; brother-in-law David E. Schlegel (Sandra) of Leesburg, VA   Other survivors include three grandchildren, Edwin E. Chamblin (Kimberly); Amelia E. Capilongo and Katherine M. Capilongo; along with three great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Kay was predeceased by her brother, Raeburn W. Updike and her parents, Winston C. and Ruth M. Updike. 

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 3, at 11:00 AM at the Herndon United Methodist Church, 701 Bennett Street, Herndon, VA with burial to follow at Arnon Cemetery in Great Falls. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
