Obituary of Ruth Thompson Tolman

Ruth Thompson Tolman, age 90, of Reston, VA, passed away October 14, 2017. Born, August 15, 1927 to the late Frank and Mary Thompson of Tenth Legion, VA. Beloved wife of late R. Cowles Tolman, Jr. Beloved mother of Ruel Tolman III of Orlando, FL and Courtney & Dan Creech of Los Angeles, CA. She is also survived by her sister Margaret Thompson Byers of Tenth Legion, VA.

Ruth taught school at both North River and Broadway High Schools. She was an active member of Herndon United Methodist Church, where she also sang in the choir for  over 20 years. Throughout her life she traveled and lived in many places, including Texas, New York, Hawaii, and Connecticut, but always returned to her true home, Virginia. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, knitting, keeping up on politics and world news. She was an avid reader as well.  

She contributed to many charities.  If you would like to donate on her behalf, two of her favorites were the Wounded Warrior Project and VFW - Veterans of Foreign Wars.  

A memorial service will be held 1:00, Friday, October 20th, at Herndon United Methodist Church, 701 Bennett St., Herndon, VA 20170.  Burial will be at Lacey Spring Cemetery, 364 Lacey Spring Rd., Harrisonburg, VA, 22802 Saturday, October 21st at 12:00 noon.
