I had the privilege of knowing Bill during the year I worked in Lesotho, between 1976 and 1978. I worked for Catholic Relief Services, while he was teaching at Matsieng with the Peace Corps. On many a weekend he would come in to Maseru for the R&R and the "city life". I shared many a dinner with Bill, and quite a few beers, and frequently he camped out on the floor of my little flat off the R.C.C. Hall. He was a kind man, a good friend and an endlessly entertaining raconteur. I only saw him once since our time together in Lesotho, at a brief get together in Washington two or three years later. And I made brief contact with him on Facebook about ten years ago.
My condolences and best wishes to all of his family.

Dear Family:
So sorry for the death of your dear loved one. Please know that God is "near to the brokenhearted and those crushed in spirit."(Psalms 34:18-19) Please find comfort in knowing that God has promised to "swallow up death forever" (Isaiah 25:8) and that “he will resurrect our dear loved ones who have passed away” (John 5:28) (jw.org)

Dear Family Members:
Bill Melvin was my favourite teacher at Putney School. I had him for 10th Grade English in 1961-62 — 55 years ago! He was a good teacher, funny, insightful, great at explaining things, and most of all, down to earth. I never felt lost or over my head or uncomfortable in his classroom. He was the teacher you would search out when looking for a place to sit in the school dining hall. Eating lunch at Bill's table guaranteed good conversation, and a chance you'd get a great yarn or at least a shaggy dog story. It's hard to put my finger on the precise quality I liked so much about Bill. It wasn't that he tried to be your pal; he always maintained the appropriate distance as a teacher, but he would speak to his teenage students with a degree of honesty grownups rarely showed children. I was instinctively drawn to this quality of Bill's.
I lost track of Bill after graduation, but I see he led a fascinating life after Putney School, with many contributions to the world. I'm sure his death is a great loss to you, I hope it is some comfort to know how fondly I remember him despite the passage of so many years.
All the best,
Parker Donham

Bill was a major figure in my Putney experience. I went on just about every backpacking trip he led in the time I was there. He was my go-to person in times of emotional upheaval. I never had him as a teacher, but he was the single most important adult in my life at Putney. I was on that winter climb up Mount Washington mentioned in the obituary, as well as winter ascents of Mount Adams and Mount Monadnock, plus numerous other trips in more temperate seasons. Along with other Putney students, I spent a good bit of time with him at his cabin in North Conway, sawing and splitting and stacking piles of firewood. Then we probably burned just as much of it in the cookstove and fireplace, around which we'd sit in the evening singing rounds and telling shaggy dog stories, of which Bill was a master. He also had a lovely tenor voice. And his reading of "The Telltale Heart" was truly and fully hair raising.
He surely touched the lives of many other young people as he did mine, at Putney and far beyond.

Sue, I am sorry to hear of your father's passing. I have very fond memories of him. I knew him at Putney (1959-1963) and he taught me English my third year. Also, in my first year, he agreed to tutor me in penmanship in the little house he lived in near the barn that year. My handwriting was terrible and after a while he wisely advised me to go back to printing and give up on script. In addition I went with him on a climb of Mount Monadnock in the winter of 1963 and then to his cabin and a winter climb of Mount Washington. I thought he was great both as a teacher and a mentor.

I remember Bill while he was a teacher at Putney and as his student. HIs classes were challenging and funny. He was always genuinely interested in each student's opinion. His was a life well lived.

My condolences to your family at this time of sorrow. May you receive comfort from the word of God during this time. The Bible’s resurrection accounts give us a sure hope (John 11:39-44). And Revelation 21:3,4 promises that one day death and all that cause tears of pain will be no more. As the days and weeks pass, may these divine promises give you peace. jw.org

What a life Bill led. A live devoted to education, the pursuit of the arts, and to service. I can't imagine one better led.
