OBITUARY – CHARLES CHESTER ANGLE

Charles Chester Angle, 98 years old, died November 17, 2017

A resident of Ashby Ponds, Ashburn, Virginia, he is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Lee Angle, his sons and their wives, C. Douglas and JoAnn Angle, William R. and Nancy Angle, and John J. and Kathie Angle, his eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by older sisters Margaret Colkitt, and Janet Marshall.  He was the only son of William Chester Angle and Elizabeth Witlock Angle, born in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, on April 20, 1919.

There will be no formal visitation; however a memorial mass will be celebrated at Saint Theresa Catholic Church, 21371 St. Theresa Lane, Ashburn, Virginia 20147, on December 4, 2017, at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow the service at the Windows Room of Ashby Ponds, 21045 Cardinal Pond Terrace, Ashburn, Virginia 20147, from 12:30 to 2:00 PM. Charles will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, at a later date to be determined.

Charles was a World War II Veteran, serving as a NCO from 1942-1946. He received The Asiatic Pacific Service, Good Conduct, and WW II Victory Medals, and a personally signed letter of appreciation from the President for his service.  Upon completion of his military duties, he became a turbine operator for the New Jersey Public Gas and Electric service. He married his wife, Lee, February 7, 1948. They set up their home on his Columbus, New Jersey homestead while also operating a small chicken farming business on the property.

They started their family with their first two sons there before moving to Mount Holly, New Jersey in the late 1950’s. Charles accepted a job in the Federal Government’s General Services Administration (GSA) in Burlington, New Jersey. He climbed in responsibility at the local GSA depot, and eventually was required to move to Washington, D.C. for further advancement in 1966. After moving his family to Silver Spring, Maryland, their third son, John, was born in 1968.  Charles rose to the level of Deputy Director of GSA and testified to Congress in that role. He retired after 30 years of GSA service, whereupon Lee and Charles retired to the South Bethany Beach area of Delaware, until their relocation to Ashby Ponds, Virginia, in 2008.

Charles loved growing a garden each year, working on restoring antique cars, and was active as a Eucharistic Minister in the Catholic church. Later in retirement he enjoyed singing, boating, fishing, and social time with close friends. Charles was a founding member of the Rancocas Antique Automobile Club of New Jersey, and was active in The Lions Club organization in Ocean View, Delaware. He and his youngest son, John, also participated in the Nautical Sounds Barber Shop Chorus. Charles was loved by his family and friends, and lived a long and faithful life as a husband and father.
