Maria Salazar, 90

Maria Clara Salazar Castaño aged 90, died surrounded by her family on December 6, 2017 at home in Sterling, Virginia. Maria was born July 26, 1927, in Ginebra, Colombia the daughter of Jose Castaño and Maria Pureza Giraldo. She was the 3rd of seven children

Maria enjoyed her family and at an early age took charge to help her mother raise her younger siblings after the premature death of her father in 1940. She always enjoyed learning and tried to do so while working to help her family.

When she was very young, she started working for a very important company in Cali, where she promoted to executive secretary. Then she entered Colgate Palmolive in Cali, as editor of soap operas for radio and television. In which she met one of the pioneers of radio and television, Gloria Valencia de Castaño Her success there helped improve the living conditions of her family.

To try and improve herself and help her family, she came to the United States in 1965 and enrolled in the Henry George School of Business. While attending an end of year class party, she met a young man, from Quito Ecuador. On December 24th, 1966, she married Vicente Mariano Salazar. The following year, Jose Vicente came into their life. The family moved to Queens, New York and they remained there until they moved in 2006 to Sterling, VA to be close to their grandchildren.

Maria is survived by her brothers Fernando and Adolfo, her sisters Blanca and Doris, and her husband Vicente Salazar; son, Jose, his wife Adrienn and two grandchildren Clara and Matthew; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Maria Clara Salazar Castaño, de 90 años, murió rodeada de su familia el 6 de diciembre de 2017 en su hogar en Sterling, Virginia. María nació el 26 de julio de 1927, en Ginebra, Colombia, hija de José Castaño y María Pureza Giraldo. Ella era la 3ra de siete niños

María disfrutó de su familia y desde muy temprana edad se hizo cargo de ayudar a su madre a criar a sus hermanos menores después de la muerte prematura de su padre. Siempre disfrutó aprendiendo e intentó hacerlo mientras trabajaba para ayudar a su familia.

Muy joven, comenzó a trabajar para una compañía muy importante en Cali, donde ascendió a un puesto de secretaria ejecutiva Luego entro a Colgate Palmolive en Cali, como editora de novelas de radio y televisión. En la cual conoció a una de las pioneras del radio y televisión, Gloria Valencia de Castaño. Su éxito allí ayudó a mejorar las condiciones de vida de su familia.

Para tratar de mejorar y ayudar a su familia, vino a los Estados Unidos en 1965 y se inscribió en la Escuela de Negocios Henry George. Mientras asistía a una fiesta de fin de año, conoció a un joven, de Quito, Ecuador. El 24 de diciembre de 1966, se casó con Vicente Mariano Salazar. El año siguiente, José Vicente entró en sus vidas. La familia se mudó a Queens, Nueva York y permanecieron allí hasta que se mudaron en 2006 a Sterling, VA para estar cerca de sus nietos.

A María le sobreviven sus hermanos Fernando y Adolfo, sus hermanas Blanca y Doris, y su esposo Vicente Salazar; hijo, José, su esposa Adrienn y dos nietos Clara y Mateo; y un número de primos, sobrinas y sobrinos.
