Obituary of Sylvia Doyle Shoup

Sylvia Doyle (Scheer) Shoup died on December 10, 2017 at the age of 80. She was born October 29, 1937 in Albany, CA, the second of four children of Doyle A. (Ziegler) Scheer and Harrison R. Scheer.

Upon graduation from high school in New Washington, Ohio, she attended school in Cleveland to become a medical secretary. She worked in Mansfield, Ohio as a medical secretary for the School of Nursing for three years. She married Jerry F. Shoup in a double wedding ceremony with her older sister Barbara on September 6, 1959.  She and her husband moved to State College in 1960 where they lived until September 1971 when they moved to Palmyra, PA. An accomplished seamstress, she was active in Palm Lutheran Church and its choir and also volunteered with other community groups.

In 1975 when the US was accepting thousands of refugees from Vietnam, Palm Lutheran Church sponsored an extended refugee family of 10. The Shoups volunteered to host one of the adult nephews who had almost completed his medical education and lived with them for several weeks until a permanent home could be found for the entire family. The two families became life-long friends.

In 2014, Mrs. Shoup and her husband relocated to Ashburn, VA to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Throughout her life, she enjoyed gardening, singing, playing scrabble and spending time with her family.

Survivors include children Cynthia S. Schiffrin (Peter Schiffrin) of Washington, DC, Martin H. (Faith Baran) of Leesburg, VA and David F. of Limeport, PA, her siblings Barbara Richardson of Green Bay, WI, David Scheer of Fargo, ND, and Deborah Fleischman of Franksville, WI, and three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on December 18, 2017 at 11 am at Community Lutheran Church, Sterling, VA. Interment will be at Attica-Venice Cemetery in Attica, Ohio. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to The American Heart Association, The American Diabetes Association, or Community Lutheran Church, Sterling, VA.
