Obituary of John Harold Stehman

John H. Stehman, Jr., beloved Friend, Co-Worker, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Cousin, and Uncle, earned his angel wings on Sunday morning January 28th, at his home in Herndon, VA. We will forever cherish his generosity and passion for life. He truly lived by the motto “Work Hard/Play Hard.” Mr. Stehman was born September 9, 1932, in Washington, D.C., to John Harold and Louise Howell Stehman. He was raised in Arlington, Virginia. After graduating in 1950 from Western High School in Washington DC, he served in the US Army and also attended University of Virginia (UVA), and graduated from UVA in 1957. He married Virginia (Ginnie) Roberts in 1960. Together they had three children, Kathy, Mike, and Jef, and lived in Arlington. The family attended Cherrydale United Methodist Church in Arlington Virginia, where Mr. Stehman taught Sunday school. He was actively involved in family activities, including Indian Guides, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, soccer, baseball, golf, as well as competitive swimming and diving. Many remember John as an avid golfer and Redskins fan (especially in the 1980s). Some also knew him in high school as a basketball player, a member of the golf club, and a baseball player. In addition, Mr.Stehman really enjoyed handball as a young adult. He loved dogs, but had no tolerance whatsoever for squirrels, woodpeckers, or for the Dallas Cowboys! Mr. Stehman enjoyed a 40 year career in positions of leadership and sales within the financial services industry. He retired as Senior Vice President of Dominion Bankshares in 2000. John was also a proud member of Washington Golf and Country Club for many years. John married Joan Stevens in 1982. Their favorite song has always been “My Way” by Frank Sinatra. The family then expanded to include Joan’s two children, Kelly (Stevens) Maggi, and Mike Stevens. Tragically, Mike Stevens lost a battle with cancer in 2004. John and Joan enjoyed decades of fun in their Solomons Island residence, in Lusby, Maryland. John particularly enjoyed boating and was a member of the Solomons Island Yacht Club. In Mr. Stehman’s later years, he struggled with Alzheimer’s, but all things considered, he lived a pretty happy life right up to the end, and for this, we are so very grateful. John leaves behind his loving wife Joan Joy Stehman, of Herndon, Virginia. In addition, he leaves the surviving children, Kathy (Stehman) DeHaven, Mike Stehman, Jef Stehman, Kelly (Stevens) Maggi, and their children, his grandchildren, as follows: Stephen Jaslow and Lauren DeHaven, children of Kathy (Stehman) DeHaven; Mike Stevens, Taylor Stevens, and Kylie Stevens, children of Mike Stevens; Francesca Maggi and Federico Maggi, children of Kelly (Stevens) Maggi; Nick Stehman and Andrew Stehman, children of Mike Stehman; and John Stehman and Michael Stehman, children of Jef Stehman. ~~~~ Celebration: We would love to have you join us for lunch (cash bar) at PJ Skidoos in Fairfax, Virginia, on Saturday, February 3, 2018, from 12 to 3 pm.
