Obituary of Barbara Ann Hartnett

Barbara Ann Hartnett, 84, died peacefully on March 8, 2018 with family by her side at Reston Hospital Center.  Her death was the result of post-surgical complications following hip replacement surgery.

Born Barbara Ann Vance on June 14, 1933 in Crossnore, North Carolina, she was the 9th of 11 children.  Pre-deceased by brothers and sisters Ray, Harry, Sam, Helen, Elwanda, Gladys and Marianna. She learned her work ethic by participating in chores on her parent’s farm, milking cows by hand, planting and reaping crops for the table and by being a team member to make the farm productive.

Barbara served her country not in uniform but in Civil Service throughout her professional career.  Duties with the U.S. Department of the Navy, the US Department of the Army and the Defense Language Institute were the major parts of her career path.  Barbara retired in 1988 after 27 years with the U.S. Government.

She leaves two sons, Daniel (Nancye), David Bates, three grandchildren, Danny, (Sarah Wiltshire), Amanda, (Sean Sullivan) and Sam Bates; two great grandchildren, Cooper and Sara Sullivan and three siblings, Jim Vance, Maxine Nicholas, and Tom Vance as well as many other relatives.

Barbara raised her boys alone, providing them unwavering love and support.  She was an avid sports fan.  She rarely missed a baseball or a football game, golf match or swim meet that her sons participated in.

She loved her Redskins and never missed a Washington Nationals game on TV.  Her room and front door were decorated with the latest news clippings of Bryce Harper, Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg and of notable events surrounding the team’s successes. She loved to talk baseball.

She will be missed so much from our lives, but we will always know she is watching over all of us and guiding us through our lives as she was so guided by her faith.

Memorial services will be on Thursday, March 15th at 1 PM at Adams-Green Funeral Home located at 721 Elden St., Herndon, VA 20170.

A private burial will be held at a later date at the Pyatte Family Cemetery near her birthplace.
