Obituary of James Alfred Almond

James (Jim/Jimmy) Almond was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, civil servant and friend.

Jim was born on June 15, 1940 to Lula and William Almond.  He grew up in Appomatox, VA with his brother, Milton and three sisters, Hazel, Carolyn and Brenda.  On January 11th 1963, he married Norma Wilson, of Big Island, VA and they began their life together.  Jim always had a deep spirit of life and desire for fun.  He worked hard and loved to make people laugh.  

Jim graduated from Appomattox Highschool in June 1958 and went on to join the United States Airforce in July 1958.  He served in the U.S. Airforce as a Ground Communication Electronics Technician until January of 1962.  This was a perfect career for Jim as he already had a love and interest in how things worked and operated.  At a young age he was into electronics and was an amateur radio operator (K40TK).  Right after his commitment to the U.S. Airforce, Jim, re-enlisted into the U.S. Navy Reserves.  He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1995 with 20 years of additional service in our military.

While Jim served in the U.S. Navy Reserves he held a long lasting career in the phone company industry. He worked as a electronics technician and grit blast operator for General Electric; an electronic filter engineer for Systems Incorporated; and held a couple technical positions finishing his career as a manager with C&P Telephone Company.  While with C&P Telephone Company he earned his Associate Applied Science Degree in Management and graduated with the honors of Cum Laude.  Following his work at C&P Telephone Company he continued his career as a manager with AT&T.  He retired from AT&T in 1989.

After completing his years as a technician and manager from the phone industry he gained employment at the Internal Revenue Service.  At the IRS he was worked as a manager for various computer specialists.  He finally retired from the IRS in 2006.

As you can see Jim was an extremely hard working, intelligent and dedicated man when it came to his career.  He took pride in what he accomplished throughout his life and shared it with this family.  In 1969 he and Norma adopted their eldest daughter, Rhonda and shortly following in 1971 they adopted their second child, Greg.  The family traveled and lived in various cities around Virginia and even parts of Florida in order for Jim to stay dedicated to his career.

For Jim, work and family wasn’t the only thing he loved.  Jim and Norma spent their marriage also traveling the world.  They have traveled to places like: Spain, China, Canada, Africa, Portugal, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Monaco and SO much more!  

They basically set foot on every continent except Antartica.  

For Jim, experience and engaging with life was a thrill for him and it’s what kept his spirit alive. 

Jim was a very diverse man.  In addition to all of these things he managed in life he also learned how to fly planes, teach ballroom dancing, played the piano and the organ.  

He loved to be on the go.

It is with great sadness that we let our beloved Jim go.  However, he lived with great spirit, courage and passion.  Jim is preceded in death by his brother, Milton Almond, his mother Lula Mae Gowin Almond, father, William Alfred Almond.  He is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Norma Wilson Almond, daughter, Rhonda & her husband, Robert Alfred of Sterling, VA; son, Greg & his wife Jennifer Almond of The Plains, VA; grandchildren, Justin Alfred, Hunter Almond and Brittany Alfred; great grandchild, Lily Alfred; and also loving sisters, Hazel & her husband Jerry Kendrick of Appomatox, VA , Carolyn & her husband Wayne Smith of Rustburg, VA, and Brenda & her husband Wes Reynolds of Lynchburg; and their children, six nieces and nephews. 

Jim will be missed greatly by so many others that he engaged with throughout his life.  

He was loved, is loved and will always be loved.
