Obituary of Cloyd Graham Aarseth

Cloyd was born on May 25, 1926 in Montauk, New York, the third of four boys. His father and mother both emigrated to the US from Norway, where his family history has been traced back to Viking days.  He grew up in Montauk, Long Island where his father, a sea captain, was the harbormaster, and went to  Montauk Elementary School, where there were 97 students in grades 1—8. Eventually the family moved to NYC because his father was again captaining ships and only able to get away overnight. Cloyd graduated from Richmond Hill High School in 1943 and went on to Colby College in Waterville Maine where he was one of the few men on campus - he was drafted but classified 1AL (Limited Service) because of a childhood eye injury.  While at Colby he was asked by one of the newspaper editors to be the sports editor since (naturally) everything was run by women then. He also wrote columns he could deliver to the Waterville paper for which he was paid 15 cents an inch – his first job!
After graduation in 1946 he moved back to NYC and was hired as a reporter for the New York Telegraph & Sun.  He was subsequently hired by the Hearst Corporation to write, direct and produce a documentary films series for NYC metropolitan area school children.  During his time at Hearst he also traveled the country and the world to produce documentary films for the USIA under Edward R. Murrow and a sports newsreel for servicemen stationed overseas.
Cloyd loved sports of all kinds, particularly baseball and anything connected to the New York Yankees.  One of his prize possessions was an autograph collection of an entire 1930s Yankees team, including Babe Ruth and Cloyd’s baseball hero, Lou Gehrig. One of Cloyd’s greatest joys was sharing his love of baseball with his oldest great-grandson, Jackson.   
Cloyd met and married Joan, the love of his life, in 1952.  They shared 64 wonderful years together before she passed away in January, 2017.  Cloyd is survived by three children Joanne, Keith (Emily), and Carol (Kevin), five grandchildren Paul(DeeDee), David (Ashley), Sarah(Tim), Kim and Stephen, and six great grandchildren (Jackson, Olivia, Hudson, Charlotte, Annalee, and Logan Cloyd) who were the light of his life.  He is also survived by his brother in law Robert, niece Kate (Mike) and great nephews Jake and Beck, nephew Grant (Katie), niece Deborah, nephews Craig (Carol) and Norman Jay (Linda) and former daughter-in-law Susan.
Cloyd gave his heart to his Lord Jesus in 1967 and after retirement went to work for Sudan Interior Mission in the Communications Department. Cloyd had a heart for missions and delighted in supporting his church, Temple Baptist, and missionary work around the world.  
After retirement form SIM Cloyd and Joan moved to Virginia to be closer to their family. While living in Virginia he served as a trustee of Lord Fairfax Community College.
Cloyd transitioned to glory and a reunion with his beloved wife Joan on May 8, 2018. His kindness, loving heart, generous spirit, and care and concern for his family will be dearly missed. Memorial contributions may be made to
