Obituary of Dorothy Anne Coffman

Dorothy Anne Coffman (Age 88)

Of Sterling, VA passed away on May 31, 2018.  She was born on January 15, 1930 in New Rochelle, NY to Hermann Schulz and Rose Francis Seitz Schulz.  As a child, her family moved to Jacksonville, FL, where she graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1948.  She attended Florida State University from 1948-1950; and graduated from Northern Virginia Community College, and from George Mason University with a degree in Social Work in 1986.

Dorothy was married to Clyde K. Coffman in 1953.   She was a Navy wife, and a highlight of that time was being stationed in Morocco and Spain for 6 years while starting their family.

Dorothy was a long-time member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, serving in numerous leadership roles including Sunday School and Confirmation teacher, Church Council, and Church Trustee.   She was a dedicated life-long volunteer, giving of her time and talents to many worthy causes, including serving as the first official Ombudsman in Loudoun County for long term care patients at numerous facilities; giving thousands of volunteer hours at Loudoun Hospital; and volunteering at group homes for troubled youth.  After earning her degree, she worked for many years as a Social Worker caring for elderly patients and their families.

She was especially proud of the part she played in the grassroots effort to get a bond referendum passed to build the first senior center in eastern Loudoun County.  She served on both the Friends of the Senior Center Board and the Senior Center Advisory Board until her passing. She is also a 65+ year member of Beta Sigma Phi service sorority.

She is survived by daughter Virginia Anne Muller (and son-in-law Michael Lawrence Muller); son Robert Allen Coffman (and partner M. Scott Wood); two grandchildren that were her pride and joy, Allison Anne Muller and Lauren Michelle Muller; sister Rosemary Greene of Roswell, GA; and extended family. She is predeceased by her husband, Clyde K. Coffman.

The family will be receiving friends and loved ones at Holy Cross Lutheran Church (1090 Sterling Road, Herndon, VA 20170) on Monday, June 4, 2018 from 5:00pm-8:00pm.  The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 11:00am also at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.  All are welcome to join in a post service luncheon to be held at the church.  Interment will take place at 10:00am, Friday, July 13 at Arlington National Cemetery.
