Obituary of Sarah Jane Lindsay

Sarah Jane (Ackerman) Lindsay, 78, of Potomac Falls, VA, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2018.

Born on April 13, 1940 in Hope, MI she was the daughter of the late Wm. Clifford and Audrey Henry Ackerman.  She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Larry A. Lindsay, of Potomac Falls, VA; son Dr. Larry A. Lindsay II (Leanne), of Wendell, NC; daughter Jill Bost (Eric), of Leesburg, VA; grandchildren Corrie, of Poulsbo, WA, Jamie and Larry (Trey) Lindsay, of Wendell, NC and Alexander and Kathryn Bost of Leesburg, VA.  She is also survived by her sisters and their spouses: Elaine and Neil Chapman, of Auburn, MI and Susannah and Marion (Mick) Ten Hoor, of Grand Rapids, MI.

Sarah Jane was born and raised in Hope Township, MI where she attended Hope Baptist Church. She graduated from Midland High School in 1957. Sarah attended Grand Rapids Baptist Bible College (now Cornerstone University). She then worked four years as a medical assistant in Midland for Dr. Meisel, a job she loved and talked about frequently.  In 1961 she married her high school sweetheart, Larry Lindsay, also of Hope, prior to his senior year at Central Michigan.

In 1962, after Larry’s graduation and commissioning in the US Army Corps of Engineers, they moved to Ft Benning, GA. Sarah was a proud Army wife for twenty-one years. During that time Larry, Sarah and their children, lived in Georgia, California, Michigan, Nebraska, Germany and Virginia. When Larry was in Thailand (1965/66) and Vietnam (1968/69), Sarah and the children returned to Midland.  The family settled in Fairfax and later Fairfax Station, Virginia for the end of Larry’s military career and his second career with TRW/Northrup Grumman. Sarah and Larry moved to Falcons Landing in Potomac Falls, VA in 2011. She enjoyed her great friends on the Mezzanine of Building 5, where Sarah and Larry lived.  Sarah moved to the Johnson Center at Falcons Landing, May 2017.

Throughout her life and wherever she lived, Sarah was very active in the churches and chapels she attended. Starting with her work with the Children’s Bible Hour in Grand Rapids, she loved sharing the Gospel with children. Sarah taught and directed Vacation Bible Schools, volunteered in AWANA, helped in the nursery and served on various committees. In 1977, she was the President of the Protestant Women of the Chapel in Bad Kreuznach, Germany.

Sarah’s primary focus was her children; therefore, she worked several part-time positions for most of Larry’s military career such as receptionist at the post infirmary and a dentist’s office.  After they became empty-nesters Sarah worked for 10 years in the IRA Department at Continental Federal Savings Bank in Chantilly.

After her working years ended, she saw her family grow again. Larry II married Leanne Moreland in 1994, and Jill married Eric Bost in 1995. She was blessed with five grandchildren: Corrie (21), Jamie (18), Trey (16), Alex (15) and Katie (15).  Sarah loved watching her grandchildren doing the things they enjoy: dancing, swimming, basketball, baseball, softball and football.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at Potomac Baptist Church, 20747 Lowes Island Boulevard, Potomac Falls, VA 20165.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 11, 2018 at Potomac Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Hesler officiating.  Burial will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association or Potomac Baptist Church.
