Obituary of Nona Ferguration Campion

Nona F. Santos Campion passed away on June 17, 2018 at the Adler Center for Caring in Aldie, VA after a recurring and lengthy battle with breast cancer.

Nona Campion, daughter of Benito Sr. and Consolacion Santos, was born on July 26, 1943 in the town of Cabalawan, Cebu province, Philippines.  She is survived by her son, Renato Campion, daughter, Melissa Campion, granddaughter, Brianna Campion, brothers, Alfonso and Benito Jr. Santos, sister, Sonia Santos, and many loved ones.  She is preceded in death by her father, Benito Sr., mother, Consolacion, and brother, Reynaldo Santos.

Nona attended high school at St. Theresa’s College, Cebu, Philippines, and graduated in 1959.  She went on to attend the University of San Carlos, and then nursing school at Cebu Velez General Hospital, where she graduated  class president in 1964.

The majority of Nona’s extensive nursing career was spent at Sibley Memorial Hospital, in Washington, D.C.  During her time there, she collaborated with surgeons to bring innovative procedures to Sibley, including the first arthroscopy performed in the Washington D.C. area and an on-site bone procurement bank.  Nona also played a pivotal role in the development of a specialized orthopedics team and surgical program which continues to this day.   She was an excellent operating nurse who was highly respected for her clinical knowledge, professionalism, time spent training nurses and nurturing orthopedic residents.

Nona retired from nursing in July 2008 and enjoyed traveling, gardening, spending time with family and friends, and walking with her beloved dog, Buster, while living in Ashburn, VA.

No formal service will convene as a burial in the family cemetery in Cebu, Philippines will take place at a later date.  Family will receive friends on Saturday, July 21st from 1-3pm at the Campion family home in Ashburn, VA.
