Mr Butterfield was always a stand up guy. He believed in me when I gave up on myself. I never believed I would ever graduate high school, yet he was always there to push me. He was a very kind and generous man who would always bring loaves of bread from his local bakery. He would always have talks about me smoking cigarettes and how it effected his brother. Best teacher ever.

I was blessed to have spent many weekends with John, Alex and Stuart during my time with Troop 160. Every weekend campout with John was always enjoyable and filled with great discussion on a multitude of topics. He always knew where to find ice cream, the coolest knick knacks and I will never forget that overloaded pickup truck that tilted on the driver side. He educated my children in the school room and taught them life lessons in Scouts. His ever positive attitude was a gift. He will be missed here but will be holding court with great authors, philosophers and lovers of people that have gone before him. See you in Heaven, JB.

Wow, this hits very hard for me. Mr. Butterfield taught my Intro to Newspaper class in 9th grade. It was the first class of my very first day at Westfield - essentially the first teacher I met, just after losing my father (who passed on what should have been my first day of high school). He made a joke about me missing the first week of school, to which I responded with anger. But he persisted with kindness and checked in with me frequently to see how I was doing. He made turning up for school that year bearable. In the following years I still made sure to stop by and say hello (in junior year he even let my friends and me film a really terrible mini-movie about Gulliver's Travels in his classroom!). He was a shining light in education, and my own personal journey. He will be very missed.

I'm so sorry to read about the passing of one of my favorite teachers at Langston Hughes in the mid-eighties. Mr. Butterfield was my 7th grade English teacher and he used to call me "Biscuit" as a nickname and he'd always pick on me in class,. He always had a smile and was one of my two all-time favorite teachers. To this day, I don't forget him. I'll add that when he was my teacher, he actually kicked me out of his class because I developed a crush on him. I was reassigned to a new teacher. I was 14 then and I'm 46 now. A funny memory. Even through it all, I knew he had my best interest at heart and I never held a grudge! My deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Dear Mrs. Butterfield and family,
We are so sorry for your loss. Mr. Butterfield taught my son, Patrick, at Westfield High School. Patrick absolutely loved him; he was incredibly kind and devoted to his students. Patrick became seriously ill his senior year and Mr. Butterfield came to our home to tutor him. We, too, loved Mr. Butterfield - he was funny, laid back and clearly understood teens, particularly, creative, artistic ones. He was incredibly supportive, taking time outside of the classroom to support their endeavors.
Please know that our thoughts are with you.
Love, Steve and Lu Ann McNabb and the McNabb Family

What a tremendous loss. I sorely missed John's humor and positive outlook when he retired from Westfield. Such a joy to be around. And such a great model of balancing one's dedication to family, profession, and community. My best to all of his loved ones. Take comfort in the assurance that John touched so many lives as a messenger for good, and that thus his memory will live on in many hearts.

I remember John from our time at the lake. The first time I went to the lake we stayed at the camp there and paddled over to Aunt Nona's house every evening around the witching hour. I always thought it was fun staying at the lake, and John and your family are part of my memories. One of the things John left with me was a love of Harry Potter. We were doing a bonfire on the lot next to the camp one night and he and the boys started telling me about the books. I was a fan of Lord of the Rings already, but never read Harry Potter until that summer, I made it to the end of the third book by the time school started.

John was such a kind and warm colleague who treated me with genuine concern. For some reason, he must have thought I needed looking after because he kept giving me part of his lunch and inviting me to travel north to his family’s vacation home. His affection for students and his peers was obvious. I am so sorry for your loss.
