I just found out about John's passing. Great sadness fills my heart. I first met John in 1968 or '69 as we both rode the school bus to high school from Sherwood Forest in Baton Rouge. I was the friend who introduced him to Starr. I was also one of the groomsmen at their wedding. The day they were married in the Methodist church in Broadmoor, it rained quite a lot. I was later told that such a heavenly weeping was a sign of good luck for the man and wife.
And as some may know, we truly had a tight group of friends in high school and then later in college. It was a time of great wonder, and John & Starr were such a goodhearted couple. They were both giving and concerned for others. John and I even drove his new Ford Pinto up to the Jersey coast to see his grandparents one year and to help them move some furniture.
My thoughts are with his children and grandchildren. They both will be dearly missed. It's quite sad.

Sending Prayers and Blessings to John and Family. John was like family to me during my two decades as a newspaper industry executive. We seemed to always be showing up on the same podiums year after year, becoming great friends, including his dear wife. John was a true saint in a tough industry. I will keep him in my positive memories and prayers. I learned of his passing in the announcement of the well deserved John P. Murray Award for Excellence in Audience Development. God Bless, Rick Forgay

Although I only knew John professionally, he always took the time when we saw each other to seek me out, and spend real time in conversation.
From what I saw, he was genuinely interested in the people around him, and that is such a blessing to the individual, like me, who is on the receiving end of that kind of warmth and concern.
My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

So sad to hear this news... I worked with John at Fort Wayne Newspapers for several years, he liked to share a good laugh and had your back when needed. I had the opportunity to work with him after we both left Fort Wayne Newspapers when he was at NAA. We had some good conversations and shared some laughs through the years. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers to his children and his family.

John lived the virtue of magnanimity. St. Thomas Aquinas says the virtue of magnanimity (greatness of soul) makes “someone deem himself worthy of great things in consideration of the gifts he holds from God” (Summa Theologiae II-II, 129, ad 4). It is a part of the virtue of courage. The 1913 Webster Dictionary put it this way: “The quality of being magnanimous; greatness of mind; elevation or dignity of soul; that quality or combination of qualities, in character, which enables one to encounter danger and trouble with tranquility and firmness, to disdain injustice, meanness and revenge, and to act and sacrifice for noble objects.” This is the quality, the virtue that John Murray brought to this world and shared with us all.

Wonderful memories of John and Starr Murray. My condolences and prayers are with their family members.
I first met John and Starr and Our Lady of Hope Catholic School; they taught a religious education class in the classroom next to the kindergarten class where I was an aide. Their amazing spirit and smiles are always in my heart.

Such a shock to hear of John's passing. He was a true industry voice and teacher for the newspaper industry. John taught so many of us so much through reports, conferences and webinars over the years. He was always someone you could turn to for advice and information. His passing leaves behind a big hole that won't be easily filled in our industry or in the hearts of those who loved John. Condolences to all his family and friends and all who knew him as I did.

We will all miss him dearly in the newspaper business but I am comforted knowing he is now once again at Starr’s side in heaven. God Bless you, the family, as you deal with this loss.

John was a friend and mentor, always willing to share but, more so, listen. I thank his family because John traveled so much, giving his time and energy to an industry he loved. But when you were with him, he wanted to talk about family and how proud he was as a husband, father and grandpa. I miss him already. Peace and blessings to John, Starr and the whole family.

We will always be grateful for the love John showed our daughter Lacy and how he welcomed her into the Murray family, from the beginning, but truly last year when Peter and Lacy wed, he gained another daughter!
John, though the time we all shared as family, with dinners, engagement of our kids, Christmas and the sail around the Chesapeake Bay, (my favorite) was way to short of time, it will always be cherished by Gary and I!
Our love to each family member and friends as we remember the special father and man John was to all
