Carl was a true champion of quality building envelope construction. He was steadfast in his expectations of the architectural design team to require all bidders to follow his specifications.
During my tenure at Benson Industries,I met Carl first on the Alcoa HQ in Pittsburg. It was a superb building. We subsequently did several more signature projects. Carl became a great long distance friend and collaborator over the years.
We shared our love for Dodge pickups with big v8 motors!
He is greatly missed and I cherish his memory. Rest easy my friend.
Best wishes to his family,
Jeremy Mucha

Just learned of Carl Hensler's passing and want to extend my condolences to his family.
Carl was a true professional whose goal was to achieve the best possible outcome for his clients I never saw Carl "back down" in a meeting due to his vast technical knowledge and his resistance to "cutting corners." Carl was an expert on the building envelope and I can't imagine how many structures worldwide were improved due to Carl's involvement
In all our discussions over the decades Carl never forgot to mention his love of family I learned a lot from you buddy Rest In Peace David Spalding, President, American Hydrotech, Inc

On behalf of all of us at American Hydrotech, Inc. I wish to offer my condolences.
I first met Carl in 1991 when he was at SOM/DC along with Neil Thomas of Thomco and Dave Spalding, President of Hydrotech and a good friend of Carl's since they both shared Chicago roots.
As a "Salesman" Carl taught me the importance of fully understanding the "real world" features and benefits of a certain product or assembly.
Carl valued being in the field, on the job site and truly understanding how a building was supposed to be put together rather than just relying on details put on paper.
As an architect Carl was all about "contructability" and his grasp of the technical complexity and coordination of the design and building trades was unmatched.
Knowing Carl made me want to get out on job sites more often in order to fully understand how the products and assemblies I was representing actually performed in the "real world"...there was nothing "virtual" about Carl as he was always..."All In"...and delighted to share his vast knowledge.
May you "rest in peace" you legendary, iconic man. Regards, Matthew Carr

I and my wife Jan were very surprised to learn of Carl's death. He was a great guy and very knowledgeable about all the technical aspects of Architecture. He also served as my mentor when I first came to washington D.C.in 1980 and we really became great friends over the years. Carl with be missed within the Architectural community.

Sandy, Jen and Greg: It is with great sadness that I learned of Carl’s death today. I always liked Carl for his warmth. His subjects in the Technical Department might call it heat but those of us that knew and worked with him for a long time knew that his fierceness was founded in a passion for the profession and a genuine caring for people and wanting them to be successful by getting it right. I also appreciated Carl for his Encyclopedic Technical knowledge and his enthusiasm for sharing it...although I always had to check my schedule to see if I had enough time to hear the answer before asking a technical question! Carl will be missed by his former colleagues at SOM and CMH. His treatment by SOM still makes me angry.

To the Hensler Family, I send my condolences and respect. To Carl, buddy, I know you are in a place of peace. I can’t thank you enough for being a good man to me & family, and sharing your wisdom and stories over the years. Having been blessed by the timeless values we both share, it was a pleasure to spend time and review Life’s many lessons, humor, and Chicagoan ways. To a good man, you will always be remembered and valued!
Your Saffold Way Buddy,
Jonathan

I will always treasure our late night games of Monopoly and how you cheated every time. But most of all I will remeber when I was in my 20's you told me I reminded you of Sandy at that age. That single statement will stay with me forever RIP

Carl, I have many memories of you from the many years of living in our section of the HCA cluster cul-de-sac. You and Sandy were one of the first neighbors to welcome David, Sara and I to the neighborhood and we also shared a mutual acquaintance in my father-in-law, Ed Kirsch as you had worked with him on a couple of architectural projects.
I remember when you had Gunther (dog) and Pumpkin (cat). You used to walk Gunther late at night and usually came up behind our house on the berm and I always had a comfortable safe feeling knowing that you two were out there late at night, especially since David did so much traveling and that left Sara and I alone quite a bit. I knew that if I should have any problems or concerns with the maintenance of the house or my car, I could call upon you and you would help to solve my issues.
Yes, you had your opinions and thought process, but one of the things I especially liked about you was that even though our opinions were completely opposite of each other (and we'd get into some heated discussions about some politics, etc.), you would allow me to voice my opinion and still give me the respect that I deserved and we both would be able to walk away without any hard-felt feelings and not feeling like each of us was pushing our agenda on each other.
There are many other memories, but these are the ones that seem to stick out the most in my mind. David and I wish you a very well-deserved rest in peace and hope that you find that inner peace that you have been seeking. Gay and David Kirsch
