Obituary of George William Dugdale

George William Dugdale, the son of the late George and Florence Dugdale, died peacefully on July 20, 2018 at his home in Herndon, Virginia after enduring a prolonged illness.

George was born in the Springdale section of Stamford, CT on February 23, 1931 and was a graduate of Stamford High School, class of 1949. He put his college studies on hold in 1952 to serve in the US Army during the Korean War. He was first stationed at Fort Myers in Arlington, VA and was selected to serve in the Honor Guard for the Eisenhower Inauguration. His second assignment brought him to Karlsruhe, Germany where he served in one of the first integrated Army troops. He was fortunate to never have had to fight in battle during his service. George graduated from Bridgeport Engineering in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with his oldest 4 children in attendance.

George is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, JoAnn. They were married on August 2, 1958, lived most of their married life in West Redding, CT and spent their retirement years near Lake Norman in Mooresville, NC. George is survived by his devoted five children: Jody Secules and her husband Michael Secules of Hollis, NH, Tracey Dugdale of Reston, VA, George J. Dugdale and his wife Nancy Dugdale of Charlotte, NC, David Dugdale and his wife Kristen Dugdale of Superior, CO, and Suzanne Doran and her husband, Jamie Doran of Havertown, PA. He had a close relationship with his eleven grandchildren and dedicated ten years to writing a blog for them. From oldest to youngest he continues to watch over them and cheer them on: Chiara, Nick, Eric, George “Sam”, Jack, Luke, Joseph, Molly, Emma, Jenny and Mary.

He is survived by his sister, Jane Swansen of Rochester, MN, and was predeceased by his brother, Billy Dugdale and his sisters Florence Frey, Audrey Ritter and Jeanne Lovejoy. George is also survived by his 11 nieces and 15 nephews - many whom were endeared to their engaging Uncle George, especially those who grew up on Knickerbocker Avenue.

George took pleasure in asking questions and stimulating interesting conversations with people and sharing his positive outlook on life with those he touched. He enjoyed the challenges of his work where he was instrumental in the development of many breakthrough technologies such as night vision goggles, specialized coatings for B-52 bomber windshields and high output spectrum-specific arc lamps used in semiconductor lithography. The lamps that he developed and built were integral to exposing the photoresist on the silicon that enabled making Intels integrated circuits and computer chips. He was a talented athlete who enjoyed baseball in his youth, and a competitive game of tennis or golf in his later years. George loved to watch football and was a loyal NY Giants fan even after moving to North Carolina. He was a compassionate cheerleader for the underdog - helping and teaching others throughout his life. He had a distinctive laugh, an expressive smile and a great sense of humor. He felt at home in nature and he enjoyed not only solving problems during his professional career as an Engineer but also contemplating the many questions he had about life, the cosmos and spirituality.

Services for George will be held in Redding, Connecticut - with details to follow.
