Obituary of Ralph Monroe Cline

Ralph Monroe Cline, Jr. of Potomac Falls, Virginia passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 30, 2018.  He was born on August 13th, 1929 in Baltimore, Maryland to Ralph and Catherine Cline.
 
Ralph graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and went on to University of Maryland.  He was then appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1952.  While at West Point, Ralph was an All-American lacrosse player.  He met Carrol Joye Schewe while serving in Germany, and they married in 1956.  
 
During Ralph’s career in the Army he earned his Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering at the University of Arizona.  Subsequent assignments included teaching at West Point, a field tour in Korea, serving with the Atomic Energy Commission, and a combat assignment in Vietnam.  He retired from the Army in 1973 as a Lieutenant Colonel.  For the next five years he consulted at System Planning Corporation.
 
After retiring, Ralph helped design and build his home in Great Falls, Virginia.  He was an active volunteer at the Great Falls United Methodist Church and the Great Falls Lions Club.   Ralph also stayed involved in the West Point Alumni Association, playing a major role in planning the 50th reunion for his class.  In addition to his volunteer service, Ralph and Carrol enjoyed travelling throughout the world and visiting friends and family.
 
Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Carrol, and by his son, Gary Cline and his wife, Barbara of Aldie, VA; his daughter Jennifer Harris and husband, Don, of Aldie, VA; and his son, Robert Cline of Purcellville, VA. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Emily Harris, Jack Harris, Anne Harris, Stephen Fox and wife, Kathleen, and Laura Fox and great grandchild Ellie Fox. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Hennessey of Baltimore, MD and nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his sister Virginia Lansinger, also of Baltimore, MD.

Family will receive friends at 12 noon Saturday August 4, 2018 at Great Falls United Methodist Church.  A funeral service will commence at 1:00 PM. Internment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be made to the Great Falls United Methodist Church or the Fairfax Lions Club at fairfaxlions.org.
