Obituary of John Scott Ward

John Scott Ward, 67, died August 3, 2018, at his home in Herndon, VA with his wife and daughter by his side.  On March 11, 2011, John was presented with a challenge—Stage IV Lung Cancer.  Faith in God, trust in his oncologist, love and support from his family; he met that challenge for 7 years, 4 months, with great fortitude, stubbornness and determination.
John was born on April 9, 1951, in Leesburg, VA, to the late Mack Edward Ward and the late Jean Testerman Ward.  He was preceded in death by his son, John Scott Ward III.  He is survived by his wife, Deborah Brillhart Ward, of 33 years, daughter Michelle “Micki” Patricia Ward, grandson Cory Malachi Ward, sister Judy Rickard (Toby) of Purcellville, VA, brother Mark Ward of Denver, Co., his Uncle Art Testerman (Janet), cousins, nephews, nieces, in-laws, and very special friends and neighbors.
John worked commercial construction as a superintendent for several local contractors--Scott-Long Construction, Inc., Interior Construction Inc. (ICI), Howard C. Handy and Sons, Inc., and from March 2002 to November 2010 Utica Contracting Inc.  John met his wife while working with Scott-Long on the office building where she worked in Vienna, Va.  They met at Mr. Smith’s one evening, after she was told that, yes, there was hair under that baseball cap, and he was an owner of a 3-piece suit.  What was a quick “let’s meet to see if we like each other” resulted in marriage a year later.  Besides working construction throughout the week, he would build and repair whatever needed to be done at home.  Perhaps once or twice, an outside contractor needed to be called. John was even making repairs on the roof when his doctor called with urgency to inform him that he had a partial lung collapse.
Through the years he enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, golfing and attending NASCAR races; and most importantly, going to Ocean City, MD with his family.  He was a long-time member of American Legion Post 184 and the NRA.   He will be dearly missed by many.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Adams Green Funeral Home, Herndon, VA at 10:00 a.m. with funeral services following at 11:00 a.m., also at the funeral home.  Memorial donations in memory of John may be made to the INOVA Health Foundation, 8110 Gatehouse Road, Suite 200 East, Falls Church, VA 22042, https://foundation.inova.org/donate-now; the Lung Cancer Research Foundation at www.lungcancerresearchfoundation.org/; or to a charity of one’s own choice.
