Bruce Burley

Bruce Burley, 88, of Ashburn VA, passed away on Tuesday August 14th at Inova Loudoun Hospital, surrounded by family.

The son of Reverend William Burley and his wife Hazel, Bruce grew up in Hamburg NY. He and his sister Marion enjoyed spending time on the shores of Lake Erie. Valedictorian of his class at Hamburg High School, he attended Oberlin College, and later attended graduate school at the University of Connecticut and Yale University. He was a long-time employee of IBM working as a computer programmer.

Bruce was married to his wife Elaine for over 60 years.  They raised their family of three children in Dutchess County, New York, before retiring to the shores of Lake Keowee in Seneca, South Carolina. Bruce enjoyed rowing on the lake and their family loved visiting there. Recently Bruce and Elaine moved to Virginia to be closer to family.

Throughout his life Bruce was physically active and mentally engaged. He loved reading and was known for his extensive book collection. Together he and Elaine were enthusiastic square dancers, involved in clubs both in New York and South Carolina. In addition, Bruce was an avid cyclist, swimmer and rower. In his younger years he played tennis, and he enjoyed ping-pong until his death.

He is survived by his wife, children Ruth, William, and Philip, and 10 grandchildren.
