William C. Gehrke was a work colleague of mine during the halcyon days of TRW and then later, after he retired, he and I became truly great friends. I first met Bill when he came into our project space to discuss with us the attributes of the Chromatics (high-resolution graphics) Display system. I was amazed at how much he knew about this product but also all of the alternative display systems as well. But that was just the start, because Bill studied and learned about all manner of electronics devices, micro-to-mini computers, all the way up to main frames. Over the years at TRW, he supported every project I ever worked on and everyone else’s as well. He became so good at this that TRW named him a Technical Fellow. I thought that was marvelous but I named him “Q”, after the fictional technical genius who appeared in every James Bond motion picture.
Bill was a technical giant, but a soft-spoken man with great persuasive powers.
He was a gentleman, a great family man, a Christian man, and a true friend who I will miss immensely.

Bill was one of the kindest, sweetest, most gentle men I have ever known. He was a pleasure to work for and with, he was a mentor and a friend. My heart broke to hear of his passing. I send heart felt prayers to his family and friends at this time of such sadness. He will be sorely missed and always remembered.

Thank God for this gentle, humble, brilliant, friendly, loving, kind, sharing, teaching, Christian, giant of a man with a huge heart who saw in my then boyfriend and soon to be husband his potential and intellect and goodness! Bill hired Cliff into TRW as a very young engineer right out of college with a still somewhat rebellious hippie streak in him and then hired him back into TRW again about 9 years later after a 2 year stint at Mitre. Bill was like a father to Cliff, patiently mentoring him for decades, professionally and personally, and we were privileged and blessed to be friends with Bill and Jo for 45 years !!! Our lives and our family would not be what they are without Bill and Jo! The news of Bill slipping away from all of us here on earth and I know getting his eminently deserved shining wings literally took my breath away and knocked me into the wall. We love you both forever! - Cliff and Jody Nelson
