Tonight I was on the internet looking at completely different things and I ended up here which is so amazing to me. Ann, Mrs. Simmons taught me at Loma Verde elementary school in Marin County in 1966 and still remains in my memory as the best teacher I ever had. She was so beautiful with her dark long hair and pretty cotton dresses that were in fashion at the time. I too remember her southern accent thinking strangely that she was related to Davy Jones of the Monkeys, not realizing as a 6 year old that English and Southern accents were different :-).
Loma Verde was close to Hamilton Air Force Base where I believe Mr. Simmons was stationed at the time. I remember going on a field trip over there and also visiting Mr. Simmons after she was no longer my teacher, seeing her after Bradley had come into the family we even exchanged letters for several years after she moved back to Virginia.
Anyway, in reading her beautiful obituary, I see that she touched many lives and lived a wonderful meaningful life. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you as I know you must miss her terribly. May her memory be eternal. As I head for my 60th year, she has remained in my heart and that's the truth.
Best wishes and love to you and the greatest sympathy. Love, Susan McLaughlin

Ann Simmons, my friend since 1984. My initial encounter with Ann was at Louise Archer Elementary School where she did a reading evaluation of my 8-year old who had just transferred mid-year into the 4th grade in Fairfax County’s GT program. She was so warm and kind that I immediately knew that we were destined to be longtime friends.
Ann was so engaged with the children that she taught and it was so obvious that her love for teaching these children who needed just a little bit of extra attention was the focus of her career. Not only did Ann engage the children who needed evaluation or those that needed remedial reading classroom time, but she always knew which children lacked emotional support in their lives. I am sure throughout her career she met as many children that needed her as someone they could come to with problems at home, lunch money, or even a place to stay for a weekend so they could regain their footing for whatever problems they had when they left school as much as they needed remedial reading.
After our initial meeting, I volunteered in her classroom to assist her with the many children she had under her wing. She had so many children that had needs requiring different levels of instruction. I could only help where she needed someone who could provide assistance to her children who needed minimal help by listening to their reading and reading to them. She worked many long hours past school hours to provide what her children needed.
She was so innovative. She developed activities that were fun for these 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders. They all loved coming to Ms. Simmons classroom. We dubbed them as “Simmons Stars” and provided shirts with their names and she had a parade through the elementary school hallways which made these children who were not winning awards in their classroom feel special. But they were all winners as Ms. Simmons Stars. I could provide so many examples of this type interaction, but suffice it to say, she was an amazing person and a wonderful teacher.
She and I, along with our husbands, became friends outside of the school. We socialized at our homes and they made trips to visit us when we were temporarily located in Key West, FL due to my husband’s work. We always felt that we were so lucky to have Ann and Howell amongst the people we called our friends.
I felt a deep connection to Ann even after she was diagnosed with the terrible disease and her memory began to fade. Occasionally, I would provide care for her as Howell would take desperately needed time to regain his equilibrium from caring for someone who needed daily care. Even as she sank deeper into this abyss that closed her off from the world, she was the same sweet, smiling friend that I had always known.
The last time I visited her at the wonderful facility that she called home for the past few years, she did not remember our many wonderful times together, but I sat and held her hand a hour or so and she was so content that I believe she knew in the depths of her soul that I was her friend.
Job well done, Rest in Peace, Ann.
