Jim was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio and graduated from Youngstown State University. He was a high school English teacher prior to a career as a marketing manager for C&P Telephone and then AT&T, where he focused on the travel industry. After retiring from AT&T, Jim was a vice president for Ober United Travel Agency. He then returned to his true calling and first love as an AP English literature teacher, first in Loudoun County Virginia public schools and then in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Jim married Rosemary Panigall on August 18, 1962. They were longtime residents of Sterling, Virginia where they raised three sons, Sean, Eric, Curt, and a daughter, Megan. Jim was an avid reader, a singer, history buff, and patron of the arts. He was a member of the VOCE Choral Ensemble and the Williamsburg Choral Guild. Jim was a cantor and sang in churches from the time he was a boy. His voice brought joy at weddings and comfort at funerals over the years. Jim was happiest singing, attending concerts, operas, musicals, and plays, or traveling. He supported organizations such as the Wolf Trap Opera Company, So Others Might Eat (SOME), and the Hospice House of Williamsburg, Virginia. Jim will be remembered for his wealth of knowledge, love of discourse, and quick wit.

He is survived by his brother David and wife Adriene of Manhattan Beach, California, brother Paul and husband Daniel McVey of Los Angeles, California, son Sean and wife Shirley Prosser of Herndon, Virginia, son Eric of Fairfax, Virginia, son Curt of Ashburn, Virginia, daughter Megan and husband Mike Kohonoski of Leesburg, Virginia, grandchildren Aaron, Sarah, Colin, and Lauren Prosser, and great granddaughter Arabella Sobonya.
