I worked with Phil at BAE for over a dozen years. When I first met him I thought he was aloof and a bit full of himself. How wrong I was. As I came to know him I realized how warm and caring he was and I was so happy when he volunteered to teach some of the management modules for a course I facilitated for several years. Phil was a natural in the classroom who wove stories from this own career into his material. Student evaluations regularly identified him as an engaging instructor. who helped them understand why the concepts actually mattered.
I will greatly miss him.

I have not seen Phil in many years, but worked with him when he was in the Navy Reserves. I remember him as a hard worker, an effective leader and a great friend. Phillip Leyva was a joy to work with. Over the past 7 years, we worked together on his projects via email. You were an amazing friend and so much fun to work with. I will miss you standing outside my office door in those bright colored shirts (that can easily be viewed from space) encouraging me to leave work and go to happy hour. Who is going to remind me of all the many reasons why I am still single? And complain about the candy in my candy dish (while eating it, BTW). I will miss sending you meaningless memes just to make you laugh at inappropriate times. But most of all I will miss your kindness and sincerity even through your jabs and put-downs. I will miss your stories about your time in the military, baseball, and your boys, and just all our conversations about absolutely NOTHING work related.
I'll miss you dearly my friend. And I will love you always.
PS - Thank you for for fighting Al Qaeda while I was busy wasting the tax payers' money reading books and incurring student loan debt I'll never pay back.

My prayers and thoughts are with the Leyva family. Phil was a great friend and a loyal business colleague (and office mate). We often had many discussions about guitars and attended the Guitars for Vets events at the Arlington VFW - where he - the guitar master - talked me (the novice) into playing with him at the June 2018 open Mic night. His mentoring advice was - "pretty good, but you need to work on your chord changes." RIP my friend - you will truly be missed.

Working with Phil was one of the greatest privileges of the past several years. He was my boss, my mentor, and my friend. I owe him so much for where I am today in my career. I will miss seeing him and talking to him daily.
He used to call my daughter "Bay Tiny" and I remember one day at a Nationals Game organized for our team, he spent the whole game feeding her peanuts. It was so cute how children were drawn too him.
