Obituary of Thomas John Gourzis

Thomas J. Gourzis (Age 73), beloved husband and father, passed away December 6, 2018, after a third bout of cancer. Thomas is survived by his wonderful wife of 46 years, Christina, two beautiful daughters Angelina and Areti, two wonderful sons-in-law Yannis and Michael, as well as five fun, precocious grand-children, Iliana, JT, Christina, Fotis, and Tina. He will be sorely missed by all the friends, family, and neighbors who loved him.

Thomas was a kind-hearted soul with a penchant for mischievous humor. He loved building with wood, including TV stands, mail holders, and bird houses. He enjoyed spending time with his grand-children, listening to Greek music, and learning all about new technology. Though he was a quiet man, Thomas was full of wisdom and sound advice. He helped friends, family, neighbors, and strangers alike.

Born in Lefkada, Greece, Thomas spent the first part of his adulthood travelling all over the world on cargo ships and pursuing all sorts of adventures. At age 27, he immigrated to the United States with his lovely wife, Christina, and started a family. Life in the United States can be very challenging for immigrants, but his greatest pride was the education and achievements of his two daughters, who he believed had a better life by being born in America.

Thomas had an unobtrusive but powerful impact on those around him. His presence offered comfort and guidance to those who knew him and respected him. His legacy is one of grumpy charm, silly antics, one-liner jokes, and deep commitment to family.

Memorial Details

Thomas’s Viewing will be held on December 13 @ 5–8pm at Adams-Green at 721 Elden Street, Herndon, VA 20170.

Thomas’s Funeral will be held on December 14, 2018 @ 10am at St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church: 3149 Glen Carlyn Road, Falls Church, VA 22041.

The burial will be @ ~12:15pm–12:30pm at Chestnut Grove Cemetery: 831 Dranesville Road, Herndon, VA 20170.

Reception to follow at Amphora’s Diner @ ~1pm: 1151 Elden Street, Herndon, VA 20170.
