Obituary of Marc Steven Toloczko

Marc Steven Toloczko of Great Falls, VA, passed away unexpectedly on December 15, 2019 in Bethesda, Maryland at age 63.

Marc leaves behind his beloved wife Heidi Schafer Toloczko, daughters Thora, Sonia and Julia Toloczko, all of Great Falls.  He is also survived by mother Theresa (Steuernagel) Toloczko of McLean, Virginia, brothers Matthew (Lynn) Toloczko of Great Falls, John (Susan) Toloczko of Vienna, Virginia, sister Marcia Catello of Orlando, Florida and Mike (Kerri) Toloczko of Sterling, Virginia and many loving nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by father Myron “Ski” Toloczko.

Marc was born in Washington, DC on January 7, 1955.  He graduated from Oakton High School and went on to earn a B.A. in English in 1985 from George Mason University and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University in 1993.

After college, Marc started his career as a cartographer with USGS, and most recently worked as a systems engineer with Leidos.  He was an accomplished technical writer and editor, and also worked at Booz Allen Hamilton, Lockheed Martin, and Vencore (The SI Organization.)

A lifelong Lutheran, Marc was confirmed in the faith at Christ Lutheran Church and was an active member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Great Falls for many years.  He was a proud Eagle Scout, and a member of Mensa and the elite high-IQ societies ISPE (International Society for Philosophical Enquiry), Intertel and Triple Nine Society.  Marc owned and restored a succession of sports cars, most recently his beloved 1971 Jaguar XKE.

Marc’s hobbies included tending to a variety of pets and a menagerie of plants, investigating real estate deals, driving his Jag on early-morning Dawn Patrols and warm spring days, enjoying the beaches of the Outer Banks, and just spending time tinkering at home.  He loved all music, from the classical pieces he played as first-chair bass clarinet in high school to the jazz standards he studied on guitar to the Grateful Dead tunes that filled his garage on weekends.  Marc was a charismatic, friendly person who was always curious and eager to learn, and he could carry a conversation about any topic.  He loved life and made the most of each day.

Marc was a devoted husband to Heidi and father to his precious girls, and always put his family first.  He was often found at the Great Falls pool for swimming and diving competitions, at various rivers and lake venues cheering on Langley Crew, and enjoying his daughters’ dance recitals, academic ventures, and fashion shows.  He loved his parents, brothers, sister, cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews dearly.  He will be deeply missed by Heidi, Thora, Sonia and Julia and extended family, as well as his many friends and acquaintances.

Visitation will take place at the Adams Green Funeral Home at 721 Elden Street in Herndon, Virginia on Wednesday, December 19 from 5 to 8 PM.

A memorial service will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church at 10550 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls on Thursday, December 20 at 4:00 PM with Reverend Henry J. (Hank) Langknecht  officiating.  A reception for family and friends will be held at a private home immediately after the memorial service.
