Obituary of Doralene Rae Miquelon

Doralene Rae Miquelon (Dorie) died in her home at Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, Virginia on Dec. 18, 2018. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, David Stewart  Miquelon, her parents, Gladys and Carl Peterson, her brothers Byron and Norman Peterson, and her sisters Patricia Peterson and Joyce Arrasmith. She is survived by her brother, Stanley Peterson, her four children, James Miquelon (Joanne), Sandy Olszowy, Diane Segelhorst (John) and Marcia Miquelon (Jacob), her eight grandchildren, Eric, Brian, Scott and Max Miquelon, Nicholas and Nathan Olszowy, and Brad and Carrie Segelhorst, and two great-grandchildren, Claude Miquelon and Elise Segelhorst.

Dorie was born on Feb. 8, 1933, on the family farm near Macedonia, IA. She was involved with 4H, excelled at academics, and was the captain of her high school basketball team. During her years at Iowa State University, she joined the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, traveled to the Canadian Rockies, spent summers working on a dude ranch in Montana, and earned her BS in Home Economics. She also met Dave Miquelon at Iowa State, whom she married on Aug. 21, 1954. They spent 46 happy, busy years together, until Dave's death in 2001.

Dorie worked as a hospital dietitian for several years. Thereafter, she devoted her time and tremendous energy to caring for her home and family, and to her many other interests and skills. She was an avid gardener and passed that love on to her children. She sewed from a young age, and as a teenager, her skill at this craft won her a trip to New York. She made clothes for her family for many years, including formals, down parkas, wedding and bridesmaids dresses (her own, her sisters' and her daughters').  Her quilts and needlework adorned the family home, as well as those of her children and grandchildren, and were graciously gifted to many outside the family as well. She was a girl scout leader, and the organizer of countless family camping, hiking and skiing expeditions, as well as our annual cross-country drive to visit Iowa and Missouri relatives. She especially enjoyed traveling during the eight years she and Dave lived in Germany, seeing most of the countries of Europe.

There will be a celebration of her life on Saturday, January 19th, at 10:00 a.m. at Galilee United Methodist Church, 45425 Winding Rd, Sterling, VA,  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ashby Ponds Benevolent Care Fund, or to Galilee United Methodist Church.
