Wendy became a special person in my life when I met her through my brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Margaret Williams. They became close friends with Wendy and her sons when they all lived in Fairlington Villages. Wendy was loved by my entire family and became even closer when she prepared a lovely buffet for my parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1994. From then on, Wendy was officially a member of the Williams family! Throughout the years, Wendy would come and go in our lives. In May 2008, Wendy graciously opened her home for our family to have a day with our relatives from out of town. Heidi (my niece and my parent's first grandchild) and her family were here, staying with Heidi's mother, Donna, in Ashburn, Va. So, Wendy's place was a perfect location to meet! The last time I saw Wendy was at my father's 90th birthday celebration in 2010. Her laughter and vibrant personality added so much fun to this day! I will cherish the memories of having known Wendy, as will my entire family. She was a beautiful and kind person and will never be forgotten.

I met Wendy about 12 years ago at Aylesbury tea room and Antiques in Leesburg. She quickly became a dear friend. (Whomever she met, could probably say the same.)
She had the gift of making each person she met feel so special. I doubt I shall meet her kind again, but my life was so enriched by knowing her and sharing time together. A special weekend in Rehobeth at Wayne and Don’s lovely house, picking out farmers market produce, just enjoying being girls at heart and having fun. She was SUCH fun. Loved her so much.Q2PAA

Wendy was my good friend and neighbor for many, many years. She was always the life of our neighborhood get togethers here on Muddy Harbor Square. Her stories about her adventures in life were always fun to hear and her laugh was the best. One of my favorite memories is of her first meeting with my Great Dane puppy Willow. The day I brought Willow home Wendy happened to be out in her driveway sorting through some treasures she had just purchased for her store. I got Willow out of the truck and she immediately spotted Wendy and ran right down the sidewalk to her and smothered her with kisses. Willow, while only a 12 week old puppy, was already 45 pounds so Wendy had to sit on her front steps to keep from getting knocked over. She let Willow love on her, lean on her, get in her lap and she just laughed and laughed. Willow and Wendy had a special bond after that and every day we would walk by her house and Willow would stop to see if Wendy would be coming out to sit on the steps to say hello. Sometimes she did and Willow could not contain herself. She would whine and cry until she could get close enough to lean on Wendy. She adored Wendy. I adored Wendy. Wendy dubbed herself Willow’s “Aunt” and she would always say to Willow, “Come see your Aunt Wendy” and Willow would literally run to her to say hi. Even though Willow grew into a 145 pound adult, she knew how to be gentle with Wendy and it was the sweetest thing to see Willow lean on Wendy and lay her head on Wendy for a kiss. We still walk by Wendy’s house and Willow still stops to wait for her but we just have to keep going. Wendy would want us all to keep going, have adventures and love each other. I am truly blessed to have had her as a friend.

My memories of Wendy, no… Mrs. Deker were nothing but wonderful (even though we’re in our 50’s she will always be Mrs. Deker to me). As the mother of my best friend Dave, and my second mom, she held a very special place in my life. You know you are close with an adult who is not a parent when you can get in trouble, as I often did skipping out on the dishes after sharing dinner at the Deker home. The basement of their Fairlington home was always a place of comfort and home base for adventures of all sorts involving skateboards, girls, and runs to the Five and Dime for Now and Later candy.
Mrs. Deker took me and Dave to our very first rock concert. It was 1977 I think and ELO was hot! She was cool enough to pull it off even with a couple fifth graders in tow.
I smile now writing this, remembering how much time my brother Tim and I spent with Dave and Doug. I feel great sadness for those of you who will not see her day to day, especially the grandkids who I have yet to meet. (Something tells me she was an amazing grandmother.) Remember though, she will always be with you.
Just close your eyes and remember…
At the same time I feel deep gratitude for her and her boys who made my childhood so much better than it would have been without them.
My love to you all, especially you, Mrs. Deker.
