David was an active supporter of the Reston Catholic Community (RCC), its members and its first pastor Harris Findlay. I remember clearly that he was always present and always encouraging the good work this community did in the 1970s and early 1980s in support of interfaith and community endeavors. I was touched, but not surprised, when he joined the choir that sang at my son's and my husband's memorial mass. His smile and good heart will be missed.

My heart sank as I read the Holy Cross notice of Dave's passing. Since our 25th reunion he was a face that I looked to see at each reunion. Dave was a good friend of the late Tony Ciurczak. I am so sorry for your loss. I too will miss his goodness.

My sincere condolences to the family. Mr. Bobzien was a pillar in Fairfax County government. Years ago on the passing of his mother Dolores he contacted the League and made a donation in her name. He recalled that she had been a League member during his childhood and knew she was devoted to the LWV. Thank you for the many years of service. May he rest in eternal peace.

Cathy, please accept my heart-felt condolences. I was shocked to hear of John Thurston's passing and heard from classmates at the 50th reunion that Dave was ill. His life certainly sounds extraordinary and I knew you were partners in success. My wife and I live in Williamsburg now. Please give us a call if you are ever in the area. I am the only Giknis in the book.
sincerely,
Buzz Giknis

One of the dearest, kindest friends I had the privilege to work with, learn about March Madness from over lunches, attend GMU basketball games with he and Cathy, and from whom to learn how to be a mentor, a teacher and a friend. This world has lost one of its best foot soldiers, but his teachings, lessons and examples of how to live well shall never fade... With great sympathies for the family and great thanks for sharing his life with us - Julie

I had the privilege of knowing David as a YMCA workout partner, friend and as an admirer of his. He was smart, savvy, understood human nature and had great compassion for others. He was practical and thoughtful in his views of world, politics and local events. He was a loyal and engaged friend, always armed with a quick smile and a "twinkle in the eye" sense of humor. Going back to 2004, we'd meet at our Friday 6 a.m. YMCA workout led by instructor Kanan. Occasionally, she'd have us do some crazy, obscure exercise. When this happened, I'd look at David across the room. He'd look back and flash a big smile, nod and tell Kanan that we'd condemn the activity to our virtual "Book of Silly Exercises." It was great fun, good for a class laugh and made the workout enjoyable. A couple years later, it was David who suggested our morning "Y" group hold a 8:00 a.m. Friday morning Holiday Season Party. He talked me into being the host. It's become an annual tradition. David would approve the party date, the invitation and show up with Cathy and food, ready for early morning socializing. We held our 12th annual Y Holiday Party this past December 16. Thankfully Cathy was in attendance and we all thought that David would join us in 2019. Sadly, that will not be the case. For sure, his passing leaves a big void in the life of his family. The absence of his presence at the YMCA will leave a hole in the lives of those who truly enjoyed his wonderful spirit, his humor, his care and his decency. We grieve with Cathy and his family.
