Remembrance
Carole joined the National Cancer Institute and the precursor to the Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology over 40 years ago. When she retired in 2017 she was the longest serving member of the Lab. I did not know her well in the first years I served as Lab Chief in the new millenium, but when Nelson, then the Lab Manager, retired, Carole was the one I chose to take over that position. As many of you know, she was a star from the beginning.
I told this story at her farewell party- early in her tenure as Manager, someone in the Lab told me that maybe Carole spent too much time chatting with various people, to which I answered, “that’s what I want her to do!” And that’s when I knew I made the right choice. From the beginning of her time as Lab Manager, Carole got to know everyone in the Lab. She was so warm and always there to help fix everyone’s issues small or large. We all depended on her efforts to make LCMB a better place.
I certainly relied on Carole. She took care of all sorts of problems; most of them without telling me. When she did ask me for a decision, she usually had made up her mind already- I just confirmed her excellent, intelligent judgement.
When Carole announced her retirement, I chose Paul Kriebel as her successor and suggested that he spend some time with Carole going over all that she had taken on. They met nearly every afternoon for about a month going over all the responsibilities of managing the Lab. Carole knew so much, was so responsible and so effective.
I know she was excited when her family moved back to the area from California. She loved her grandchildren and, I think, when the third was due to arrive, she knew it was time to retire and spend more time with her family. It’s so sad that she didn’t have longer with them.
I’ll end with an image many of you might also have. Carole frequently would be seen walking down the hall, with her head down, deep in thought. But when she knew you’d cross her path, she’d look up and give you the biggest, sunny smile. She was a superb Lab Manager- responsible and hardworking, and she was the most generous and warm person.
We were all so upset by the sad news of her passing.
We have missed her since she left LCMB, and we miss her all the more now.

Carole was my colleague at LCMB for 10 years. As our lab manager, Carole took care of things big and small and kept the Lab running smoothly. She was a brilliant lab manager. I still remember her answer: “I will take care of it” with smile when I asked her for help for anything. It is very sad that she was taken from us! Carole will be missed deeply!

I met Carole in 1987 when I joined the LCMB. Although it as a big lab, we crossed paths often, everyday. Carole had a reliable smile and a confident greeting that told you what was up and what you had to know that day. We quickly became friends, that was easy. In the 12 years that followed, I did not know anyone in the lab that did not benefit from her help and advice. Carole was soft spoken, wise and humble, yet she had a profound influence on her colleagues and cancer research. We will miss her so very dearly.

Carole was our lab manager in LCMB at NCI. I was lucky to have been working with her for more than 5 years until her retirement. As a friend, she was kind, caring and humorous. She got along with everybody. It was so comforting talking to her. She was a good listener and often gave useful advice. We all loved her. As a lab manager, she was responsible, helpful, and supportive. She put everybody else’s need on top of hers. She solved all kinds of problems, many of which were not even her job duties. Anytime we went her for help, she always said “don’t worry, I’ll fix it.”. She never said no to people. She was one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever seen in my life. My heart is now filled with sorrow about Carole’s sudden passing. She will be truly missed. May her soul rest in peace.

Carole was one of my closest friends for about twenty years and I am so very sad that she is no longer with us. I met her through another close friend in her neighborhood. The three of us enjoyed talking about all kinds of things while walking dogs in the park, hosting dinner parties, making our favorite Italian bean soup, cooking steaks on the grill, and relaxing together in the hot sun on North Carolina’s beaches. I will fondly remember all these wonderful times that are truly the pearls of life. Carole was a kind and gentle person who often shared insightful thoughts about politics, our country and quality of life essentials. She was generous, very wise and always well-informed. I will surely miss her sense of humor and the many clever things she said. My sympathetic thoughts and feelings go out to Kara (her daughter), John (her son in-law), her grandchildren, extended family and many friends who I am sure all share my grief. I am lucky to have known Carole and will always consider our friendship to be one of life’s gifts. Carole’s spirit will continue to live in our memories and I know that my memories of her will be forever cherished.

I met Carole when I set up my group in NCI in 2000. I still remember the day that she introduced herself to me and offered many tips regarding the space and equipment that I inherited from her previous group. She was so welcome and helpful. Later on, we were so lucky to have her as LCMB lab manager. During the 17 years that I worked with her, Carole was a go-to person for me and everyone in LCMB. She listened to everyone with her signature smile, and tried to accommodate or find a solution for every request. She was a blessing to everyone who worked with her and knew her. She will be missed dearly. I am so sorry that she could not enjoy her retirement life longer. My deepest sympathy to her family.

Carole was a technician in LCMB when I joined the lab as a postdoc in 1986. She was soft spoken, a calm presence in a place that had it’s share of intensity. During my 28 years in the lab, Carole remained a constant, steady presence. It was comforting to see her. Chats almost invariably ended with smiles. She was always down to earth in her thinking, low key in her style, competent in handling her responsibilities. She loved her family and pets, and had friends who appreciated her. It is sad that she left this world when she did. Her memory is a blessing: it’s a memory filled with kindness.

I’m a friend of Carole from NIH. Carole and I had been working together for 9 years. I still remember that she took the first picture of me at the lab, and I still don’t want to accept the fact that she left us. Carole was a wonderful lab manager. We can ask her for help for anything at any time, even sometimes the stuff was out of her job duty. She always had a smile on her face and said “No worries. I’ll look into it.” She was such an easygoing person so that everyone liked talking with her and trusted her. Although she left us physically, she will be in our heart forever.

Carole was my colleague and lunch-room friend at LCMB for seven years. Not only was she a fantastic lab manager who ran the lab seamlessly and tried to accommodate every request; Carole was also kind and easy going, listened to everybody, and was the go to person in the lab for just about everything. I was privileged to have known her. She will be missed.

Carole was my friend and colleague at the NIH for 13 years. As our lab manager, she oversaw the smooth running of the lab, took care of things big and small and made it all look seamless. I admired her not only for her abilities, but also for the fact that she was one of those rare people who never looked for credit. Carole was deeply kind, very funny and could certainly keep a confidence. As a result, she was my go-to person when I needed an ear, a laugh or someone to share something difficult with. Her humor and easy friendship were matched only by her capacity to have fun! So many wonderful memories at the NIH are built around her. I was very lucky to share an office with her the year before she retired, which was when I realized that she was that go-to person for so many others in the laboratory. Thank you Carole for ALWAYS being there for us, with your unfailing sense of humor and kind heart. I will miss you so much and I feel so very privileged to have known you. You were and always will be our lab’s wonderwoman.

I was blessed to work with Carol in Larry's lab from 2005-2009. I loved her sense of humor, her sarcasm, her no-nonsense attitude, and her willingness to help with any task...no matter how trivial. She had this sense of contentedness about retirement and a pure love of the beach and spending time with her daughter and grandkids. It breaks my heart that she didnt get to enjoy this period in her life longer. Hugs to her family and friends. We will miss you Carol!

It’s hard to believe that I have lost my friend Carole Regan. Carole and I shared an office together for 15 years. I could not have chosen a better colleague to spend 40 hours a week with if I had tried. Carole supported me through thick and thin. I will miss Carole’s keen interest in politics, her sense of humor, her commitment to “tidying”, her service-oriented attitude toward others, and her love of family and friends. My heart goes out to Kara and I hope Carole’s memory is a source of strength to her as it is to me. RIP, dear Carole.
