Debbie, My heart goes out to you and the family. The name, Dennis Fitzgerald, is an icon in the IC. To me, though, he was a great man whose little smile meant the world. I also remember that he took the time to send a hand-written note when Mom died in 1999. I will always remember that act of kindness. A little bit of Dennis Fitzgerald will live on in everyone he met. Sharon Parish

Debbie, We worked for Dennis and count that time as the most enjoyable, challenging and rewarding in our careers. He cared about people and it showed, he brought out the best in everyone around him. Your loss is probably unfathomable at this time but if it's any solace we know that his spirit lives on in those lives he has touched, we still talk about his legendary "budget" meetings when a look was all it took to get his message across. He will be missed by all who knew him and remembered for his dry sense of humor, and as a kind, and decent man that grew into a legend in the IC. You and your family are in our prayers. Debbie, David and Erin, Dennis mentored far beyond the job to include the proper ways tp find and enjoy the bountiful produce of the ocean, bays, tributaries, tidal basins, and back waters. During the mid 80's he introduced us to the proper technique of chicken necks and bare netting of Blue Crabs at Soloman's Island. His love during the summer was to be in denim shorts and tee shirt fishing on the shore or out in the aluminum dinghy prowling around the pilings, boats, and beaches to snare any life out of the water. He taught us the love of raw fish on rice, or just raw fish, the proper way to shuck and eat oysters, even to cheat a bit by letting them get cold (not frozen) so they were easier to open, prior to joining with Tabasco, lemon, or horseradish before savoring the delights of the Chesapeake. Dennis was alo fond of roasted oysters and an annual supporter of the Reedville Oyster Festival. The smell of salt water with a trap, net or line in the water was where Dennis was at home. Yes he may have been a talented engineer and manager that we all feared and respected but he was most at home in bare feet, shorts, a small boat close to the salt water with anticipation of the bounty available from the Bay he loved. We took your recommendation for the stove Dennis told Ralph "he had to buy Kathy". It is now the Dennis Fitzgerald Memorial Stove. Thank you Dennis. "And until we meet again, may God keep you in the hollow of His Hand.

Debbie & The Fitzgerald Family, Please accept our condolences and prayers. As you know, Dennis was a very special person, and we know you will continue to be proud of his life and memory. Everyone has a "Dennis Story," but I would share a brief snippett of one of ours. In 1984 we were offered a job to join the government, and were agonizing whether to accept or not. One of us was working with Dennis at the time, and went to ask his opinion. In his succinct manner, he looked me in the eyes and said, "Do you want to make a difference for God and country, or continue to be a money grubbing contractor?" We chose to join Dennis and serve. That tongue in cheek comment has always said volumes to me about what motivated Dennis. He truely believed in what he was doing, and was a model engineer and manager for all of us junior engineers. He literally set the standard and touched thousands of us along his path of life. Again, condolences and God bless.
