Dearest Uncle Johnny, We are all missing you and thinking of you on this sad start to the new year. Your passing came so suddenly and it's struck the family so deeply to lose the first of their own...first son, first brother, first father, first uncle. You were always a kind, gentle soul, and the memories I have of you will always live on. Thank you for the annual summer trips to the county fair with Granny and Grandad and for teaching Sissy and I how to fish down at the reservoir as kids. Holidays won't be the same without your famous ham and warm, sweet smile. We'll miss you dearly. May you rest in peace and not be forgotten.

My grandfather was a tobacco and hog farmer so growing up my only exposure to ham was the salt cured type. It wasn't until my adult years as I was welcomed around the Hall holiday table that I was introduced to sweet ham, and Johnny was the proud cook. I have had sweet ham many times since but none has been as moist and tasty as Johnny's and not a holiday goes by where ham is served that I don't savor the memory of Johnny's ham and how proud he was that he was able to contribute to his family's happiness when mealtime rolled around. He always had a smile and kind word for everyone, and I am blessed to have had the pleasure of knowing him.
