There is no doubt that Hugh is at peace with our Lord. Hugh was one of the kindest and most generous men that I have know. His depth of faith in God and dedicated love of family was a model for me to aspire to. The world has lost a very significant human being, but his spirit will light up heaven and bring strength and solace to his beloved wife, Shirley.

I have many wonderful memories of Uncle Hugh and Aunt Shirley (or as we would always say by accident "Shoe and Hurley") from visits down to Virginia, Myrtle Beach and elsewhere. Some of my fondest are from the time I stayed with them when I went down to D.C. for an interview while in law school. I had taken the bus down and when I told them I needed to be picked up at the bus station in downtown Baltimore, well they didn't bat an eye. Hugh literally came running in and whisked me away to their car outside where Shirley was waiting white knuckled at the wheel! I had no idea before hand what the station was like, but there was no doubt when I saw Hugh and was "escorted" out by him that he would have done whatever he needed to to keep me safe. We chuckled about that several times, but it revealed much more to me about him. Even more dear to me was the fact that he insisted on driving me in to D.C. that morning and waited through the entire interview before then driving me back to their house - he was too worried to accept any other plan on my part! It is hard to think of people who were more warm and welcoming and we always had many, many laughs. He lives in my memories with that great big smile he always had at the ready. My thoughts and sincerest condolences to all of you at this time. Jenn

Aunt Shirley, Karen, Michael, and everyone, You are in my prayers. Uncle Hugh is at peace and probably enjoying a "cold one" in heaven with his brothers, Daddy, and Uncle Coop. He loved you all very much and his smile and kind heart will always be remembered. God Bless, Love you, Virginia Lee

Dear Aunt Shirley, Mikki and I were so saddened to hear the news of Uncle Hugh’s passing. Immediately, several great memories of time with Uncle Hugh came to mind. I recall when you and he took Tim and I in when our house burned down. For months, the two of you took care of us. I remember our trips to Williamsburg and Disney World, when you both “conveniently” could not find Space Mountain so we could ride the roller coaster ☺. I am so glad that we were able to spend time with the two of you over the last several years. Our children will now also have fond memories of visiting their Uncle Hugh and Aunt Shirley. CJ, Bella and Teddy will surely miss him. Of course we are saddened, but I always find great comfort in the knowledge of Christ’s resurrection. I love how the Apostle Paul highlights the importance of the resurrection to the early Christians in Corinth (1 Corinthians 15). In that one chapter, he not only highlights the historical reality of the resurrection, but he shows how Jesus’ resurrection brings us hope. We can know that since Jesus was raised from the dead, that all that follow Him will also be raised. Although we currently live in this present life, our hope really is in the future. When I allow that truth to penetrate my heart, it certainly lessens the current grief. We certainly grieve with you, but not as if we do not have hope. I look forward to seeing Uncle Hugh again, when his mortal body takes on an immortal one. Please know that although we are back in Texas now, our hearts and prayers are with you. Please do not hesitate to let us know if there is anything we can do. With great love, Rich, Mikki, CJ, Bella & Teddy

Aunt Shirley, Karen & Mike - We have fond memories - walking to your house in Laurel for a visit, Lime Vodka, dancing at weddings, Uncle Hugh's smile and warm hugs....and the list goes on. Your family is covered in prayer, not only by our house, but also by the members of our church. Love to you - Jackie & Don, Cooper & Kim
