Obituary of Thom Fitzhugh Hanes

Thom Fitzhugh Hanes, 74, a popular and long-time Herndon banker passed away on September 18, 2010, at Fairfax Hospital. Son of Stanley and Helen Crippen Hanes, he was born on May 3, 1936, and was a life-long resident of the Town of Herndon, Virginia. He attended Hampden-Sydney College, where he graduated with honors in 1958. At Hampden-Sydney College, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and several honorary academic fraternities. Following graduation, he began a long and distinguished career as a community banker, first at Citizens National Bank of Herndon, where he eventually became its President, and later as organizer and President of The Bank of the Potomac in Herndon, which later merged with BB&T Bank. He retired from BB&T in 2001 as its Sr. Vice-President. Throughout his long professional banking career, he was a respected leader and officer of the Virginia Bankers Association. He was active in the civic affairs of Town of Herndon, as a member of the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and many charitable organizations. He was a life-long devout member and communicant of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. In retirement he continued to be actively involved in many areas of the civic and town life of his beloved Town of Herndon, and he also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his daughter and son-in-law, and their triplet grand children. He was an avid and frequent golfer, reader of history, and he devoted much of his time pursuing his genealogical interest in the Fitzhugh family of Virginia. He was the first Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sully Foundation, which owns and operates the Sully Plantation, the historical home of Richard Bland Lee, located in Chantilly, Virginia. He was instrumental in delegating the daily operations of the Sully Plantation to the Fairfax County Park Authority, and he was the Treasurer of the Sully Foundation at the time of his death. He is survived by his beloved wife of forty-three years, Elizabeth Barnes Hanes, their beloved daughter, Ashley Hanes Kirkland, and her husband, Michael Kirkland, and his triplet grandchildren, Jack, Hannah, and Emily Kirkland. He is also survived by his devoted brothers, Robert M. Hanes and William B. Hanes, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues. Visitation for the Public will be held at the Adams-Green Funeral Home on Elden Street, in Herndon, Virginia, on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, between 6:00 and 8:00 PM o'clock. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Herndon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 432 Van Buren Street, Herndon, Virginia 20170.
