Obituary of Doris Jean Herring

DORIS JEAN HERRING, age 80 on Monday, February 21, 2011 of Sterling, VA. Doris is survived by two sisters, Lucille Berry and Helen Blake; one brother, Virgil Herring and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Arline Van Patten and Ruby Brown and brothers, Vernon and Donald Herring. Doris grew up with seven brothers and sisters. She fondly recalls being able to hear the roar of the Great Falls in her own back yard. Doris always wanted to be a nurse. She was a teenager when she lost her mom, and it was her "big sister" Lucille who helped Doris fulfill her career dreams. She graduated from Maryland General Hospital School of Nursing and worked in Washington, D.C. She attended American University for her B.A. in Nursing Education and ultimately earned two Master's degrees from Catholic University in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing. Her career expanded to teaching at Marymount University and NOVA College. She helped open the Fairfax Mental Health NW Center, established a School for Nursing in the Gujarat Province of India, where she lived in the 1960's, and opened her own counseling center in Herndon before she retired in Delaware. In her leisure time Doris took cruises from Alaska to Europe and dabbled in multiple real estate ventures. Memorial Services will be held Friday, February 25, 2011 at 1:30 PM at Sterling United Methodist Church, 304 E. Church Road, Sterling, VA.
