To the Kelly Family, My deepest condolences for your... all of our... loss. Ross and I were good friends in the 10th SFG in the early 70's. We both left the service to pursue business interests. I had a long conversation with him in the late 80's. I was heading to DC and wanted to reconnect. Something got in the way. My wife and I are in DC later this month and thought I should see if I could find Ross. Needless to say, I found him and can now only offer my deepest sympathies to a family I've never met. I guess this is an abject lesson in the downside of procrastination. Let me pass along a couple remembrances. Enjoying the chase of the finer things in life...in Boston. Dinner at Chardas followed by Hungarian Barack Palinka(a peach brandy) and peach crepe at the Cafe Budapest. The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel starring Al Pacino. Roast duck dinner with good wine at Leah's and my 4th floor walk-up on Bay State Rd. His complete irreverence for all things ordinary and expected. I'm sorry to be so late in reaching out to you. Bob Wilcox

Susan - I was so sorry to read this morning about Ross's death. He was such a force of life that it's hard to imagine that he's gone. We loved having him be a part of our firm. His energy and passion were contagious. His skills in national security matters were unmatched. Please accept my deep condolences for you and the children, as you all cope with this extremely sad time.

I am one of Kelly's classmates from West Point. I never knew Ross well, but we were in Vietnam at the same time, and I flew over An Loc the day after Ross earned his DSC. The battlefield looked like something from WWII. There were destroyed NVA tanks and trucks all over the place, and the town had been pretty much destroyed. I know that Ross deserved the DSC for his actions during the height of the battle, and I have always admired him for his courage under fire. I'm sorry to see Ross go - he was always one of my heros. Rest in peace, valiant warrior!

Rosco was our savior in Beast Barracks - tutoring us all through Military History. As a firstie in I-1 he again tutored us all through the Art of War. His stories were better than the text books!! He was a good friend and an unforgettable character. The last time I saw Ross was in a black tent in the wilderness looking over a mission map with red flashlights. Our faces were camouflage painted but that unmistakeable command voice was recognizable even at a whisper. Memories of Rosco will last forever. We're sorry for your loss but rest assured that he lived his life just as he would have it. His legacy is a safer world for your family and for us all. God rest his soul.

It is with great sadness that I offer my condolences to the Kelly family. I am thankful and honored that I had a chance to know Ross. During one of my working trips with Ross, we were on an early morning (dark) hike in rough terrain when he slipped and took a bad spill. He picked himself up, brushed off the dirt and twigs and said, "Let keep it moving!". I did not know for several days that the fall had left Ross with a couple of broken ribs. That's the kin of man I knew Ross to be. God Bless!

Ross was an excellent classmate and soldier. I saw him twice after we graduated: once when he stopped by to see me in DaNang shortly after the battle for An Loc; he traded me his Army issue .45 cal pistol for a CAR 15, saying he needed more firepower next time; and again later at Forces Command in Atlanta. He was the best story teller I've ever known. Safe passage, Ross.

Ross and I established a freindship at USMA, but really grew to know each other much closer while serving together at Ft Bragg on a few operatikons and exercise planning. I grew to appreciate his wit and wisdom and to respect his insights and strategic vision. He served his nation valiantly and intelligently. USMA should be very proud of this graduate and his nation grateful for outstanding service. I will miss him. Be tou at Peace. You, his family have my prayers and heartfelt support in grieving his p;assing, but also the certainty that the Christ will welcome him home at the end of his journey to Him.

Rosco and I were on the POINTER together; he the Feature Ed and I the Ed in Chief. After relaying to him the particularly harsh counceling I'd received by the POINTER OIC over the Pyrene column (his unattributed work) "John, your job is to keep MAJ Sullinger off my back so I can keep giving him reasons to brace you". The best FD = FD term paper writer I ever knew. You said inhaling the Kuwait oil fire smoke was going to get you and I guess it did. Highest combat decorated member of a military academy class counts for a lot. Reltney!

Ross was the first bright light of sanity and incorrigible humor I encountered after Beast Barracks, when we met on Pointer tables as Plebes. He and I collaborated on several pieces but it was his wit and imagination that carried them. We met several times after graduation; each time was a revelation of storytelling and good fellowship. It was my honor to know him and serve with him. He was remarkable in all ways; we will miss him. God Bless you and keep you, Ross, and look over your family.

Susan & Family, Janet and I were saddened to hear of your loss, and we send our love, sympathy and prayers. Ross, John Woloski and I were Firstie roommates in I-1 and I count that time as some of my best at West Point. As Wolo said, remembering those crazy times 40 years later still brings a smile. Who but Ross would buy a burnt orange Ford Maverick as his Firstie dream car and then name it the "Rusty Rifle"? Ross was and always will be one of a kind and Janet and I will miss him. We continue to pray for God's comfort and peace for you all.

Ross was a soldier. I doubt that any member of the Class of 70 "moved to the sound of the guns" more than Ross Kelly. Given the nature of covert operations, we'll never know exactly how many times. He was also a student of the arts, literature, and music, and a brilliant orator. (No one directed classical music like Ross did during a mess hall rally!) The hardest I've ever laughed in my life was during our Plebe parent weekend, when he lectured us all on life. Ross, I-1 borrowed you, but you'll always be a member of the F-1 Marching 100. My heart goes out to your family.
