Douglas "Doug" Arthur Barkes, 67, was born January 28, 1942 at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC to the late James "Arthur" and Margaret "Peggy" Barkes. Doug was a native of the Washington, DC area and attended Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA. He then studied to be an electrician before being drafted & sent to Korea during the Vietnam War. He was inducted into the Army on 9/20/67 as PVTE-1. While stationed in Korea, he met Chong and the two were married on August 8, 1969. He received an honorable discharge on 11/30/70 as SGT (T). He received the National Defense Service Medal & Good Conduct Medal. He was initiated into the Local 26 IBEW on 7/1/71 and retired 3/04. Doug loved working hard, fixing things around the house, doing electrical work, working on his cars. He is survived by Chong, his wife of 40 years; two daughters and their husbands, Brenda (Peter) of Brambleton, VA and Wanda (Harry) of Arlington, VA; and two sons from his previous marriage, Michael and Kevin of Arlington, VA; five grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephew. Doug was the oldest of two siblings, Robert "Bobby" Barkes who preceded in death and David Barkes. Doug, who had a long battle with his health, died peacefully on August 11, 2009 at Reston Hospital Center.
