Dear Mami, Kanna, Suba, Rajaji, Jayshree, Paddu, Shama , Bharath and Priya,
Our heartfelt condolences to all of you at this time. We have had the pleasure of spending some quality time with Srinivasan Mama and will cherish those memories for a long time to come. His affectionate and loving tribute to my Late Father in law in chaste English is something that stands out in my mind.
His love and interest in music and science concepts were truly remarkable. He loved to discuss and explain basic concepts and enjoyed doing that with the children and grandchildren. Can never forget his love for fried foods and would try to get some in every chance he could. Loved traditional food that was spicy and would surely appreciate it wholeheartedly. Lots of humor in his speech and casual conversations. Mama will be missed a lot by all of us!!!

One main similarity between thatha and me was our love for Taco Bell burritos. The popular fast food chain was a frequent breakfast-lunch-dinner option for me, even after my AP chemistry teacher often expressed his distaste for Taco Bell. However, thatha would light up and ask for a bean burrito, specifically, whenever we said we were going out to Taco Bell. Even with his battle against numerous health problems, Srini thatha never stopped loving food.
When me and the rest of the cousins visited him just a week before his passing, we showed him a slideshow of pictures from years ago. Although he couldn’t get the words out, it was very obvious that he wanted to keep looking at the photos of us and him together and spend more time with his grandkids.
It’s hard to believe that little ball of light is gone forever. I will always keep him in my memories and in my heart. I miss him so much already. I love you, Srinivasan Thatha.

Srinivasan thatha was always so interested in all of my studies, especially math. I remember one time when I was finishing up my calculus homework, he noticed the integral sign and asked me what I had learned so far in class. Without pausing to let me answer, he went on to list so many formulas and calculus topics beyond my level that I was amazed. He would also ask for my textbooks so he could read while me and Shyam were at school. I would gladly let him take them because I never used them myself. It was so endearing to see him remember so much about the topic he loved despite his steadily increasing Parkinson’s disease. He made doing math more fun and less busywork just because he would lighten up when he talked about integration and the like. I miss him so much already. I love you, Srinivasan Thatha.

It's hard to believe I will never get to talk to Srinivasan Thatha again. He was always such a joy to be around and had such a knack to make even the most boring, mundane subjects incredibly interesting. I remember many times when he would tell me interesting facts like how a car battery works, or talk to me about his favorite mathematician: Srinivasa Ramanujan, the person to discover that the number 1729 is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways, with his eyes lit up with passion.
One memory of him that always makes me laugh is how he would always ask to read my school textbooks; he was always amazed by how thorough and descriptive they were compared to the books he grew up with. Many days I couldn't find my textbooks that I needed for homework because he had been reading them before bed! Another fond memory I have of him is when I had a friend over at my house and Thatha would try to help us with our geometry homework. I don't think my friend understood what Thatha was trying to say, but we both knew he had an immense amount of knowledge.
Thatha would always want to know what's going on in all of his grandchildren's lives. Hearing about what we're up to would always put a smile on his face, as long as we were trying our hardest. Recently Shruti and I visited London, and he told me of many business meetings he had there in his younger days. It seemed like no matter what subject I talked to him about, he had an experience related to it. Thatha was an incredibly worldly man and touched so many lives. I only wish I had more time with him to discover more interesting tidbits about his life.
I love you Thatha and will miss you forever.

Something I loved about Thatha was that he was always able to make us laugh, whether he tried to or didn't try to. He was always full of jokes and stories and love for everyone around him. One of my fondest memories with Thatha was actually when he first played with Rafa, our little dog. He was so calm and held him so softly; you could really tell that he loved him from the second he laid his eyes on him. It seemed like Thatha's gentle touch actually comforted Rafa. He was so pure and genuinely loved by everybody. He will live forever in our memories and in our hearts. Love you Thatha <3

Srinivasan Thatha has truly inspired me in numerous ways. He was the one that inspired me to learn, the one that made me smile, the one that created beautiful memories with me that I ponder about whenever I have time. I remember giving him his insulin shots when he didn't want to do it himself, buttoning up his shirt at the top of the staircase when we were going out, the funny cop stories he would tell us when we were in bed, the many times he would ask us to find his glasses, and the utter joy he would get when we brought him a bean burrito. Till the end, Srinivasan Thatha has sparked so much joy in all of us. He has brought the best of the world to the table and has inspired everyone he crossed paths with. Thank you Srinivasan Thatha for offering the best of yourself to us.

I’m able to identify each member of my family based on the rhythm of their steps as they descend our 17-step staircase. My mother’s descent of the stairs is quick and brisk as she expresses her enthusiasm to start the day. On the other hand, my grandfather takes long, slow steps in contrast with the sharp, involuntary movements of his upper lip and hands that affect his balance as he walks down the steps. Ever since my grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, his physical strength has weakened. Along with many medications that are impossible to pronounce, he uses his trusty cane to maintain his balance.
As soon as I hear the plastic cane thump on the hardwood floor and his infamous camouflage crocs shuffling across the floor, I knew he has reached the end of the staircase and ready to start the day.
My grandfather visits our humble abode every three years and each visit is like a new page of a story that I can’t wait to read. Despite his numerous health problems that forced him to change his lifestyle, he still has one thing in control: his mind. My grandfather is filled with fascinating stories and endless knowledge that I could listen to for hours. Whether it be his scientific theories of the universe or a humorous anecdote of his childhood, his memory will always be intact. Parkinson’s disease has made him physically weaker and it has changed his lifestyle, but it will never take his ability to reminisce about his past. It was because of my grandfather, that I was able to fill in the missing piece of my identity, my love for elders. Throughout the years, I would help him take his medications and I remember the days I would come back from school and put a Sun hat On his head when he fell asleep on our backyard swing; his favorite spot in my house. One of my most fond memories with thatha is whenever I would would practice Carnatic music and thatha would join me and the entire house could hear his deep voice that was made perfectly for Carnatic music. I always appreciated the love and care he had for all the cousins, he truly wanted all of us to succeed and gave us all the support he could even when he was losing his physical strength and was nearing his last few days. Thatha was a fighter and I knew in my heart he was doing his best to hold on to his life to see me, but sadly he passed a day before I came to say my goodbyes. Even though we are all here to say goodbye to thatha, there is no doubt he left an indelible mark in all on our heart. Rest In Peace thatha, I will miss you, but I’m happy you’re with China thatha and your amma now.

These past couple of weeks my head is overflowing with memories. Thatha's characteristic pure and sincere curiosity is reflected in my Appa and chithappas who have a fascination with learning that I can only hope to emulate. Thatha is to thank for anything good that I've ever done, as I am so sure it wouldn't have happened without his example. His stories always completely captivated me and inspired me to be more inquisitive. His words gave me a feeling of warmth, and the old videos I've been watching these past few days bring back that feeling vividly. His expression radiated such contagious enthusiasm no matter the subject - from Stephen Hawking to a Taco Bell burrito. More times than I can count, our long conversations about his life have showcased his admirable humility and strength, his clever sense of humor, his effortless intelligence, his wonder, honesty, resilience, and magnanimity. Through all the times I found myself in need of direction, he made sure to be there for me - despite his health, through phone or through text - guiding me as if he were my north star with unmatched loyalty and care. He is with me still, guiding me through this difficult grieving process. He has seen me at my worst and my best, and through both, he was my proudest support, my most constructive critic, the kind of person you would both want to know and to be. Looking through his meticulous bookcase at our house, we will find comfort in his old loves. It is purely impossible to express my full appreciation for him in words. Feeling so lucky to have had him with me for 23 years and to continue to see his image in my Appa, uncles, and cousins. Thank you thatha for a wonderful life.

Condolences to Mami, Kanna, Rajaji, Paddu, Bharath and all family members and friends for this loss.
Mama was a genuine person with nothing by goodness and kindness filled in his heart for everyone. He knew a lot about a variety of subjects, but never once flaunted it. Very inquisitive mind, never stopping to learn. Very inspirational figure. Always looked up to him.
At every gathering, mama would hijack me to a quieter room and pepper me with questions on Carnatic music and related topics. He would ask me what I was currently learning. He would suggest a list of artists to listen to. One time he spoke to me about Madurai Mani Iyer for an hour or so. I would, from time to time, share links from YouTube with him.
He knew better than to engage me in conversations about science, technology, physics, math etc. He knew everyone's passion and would construct his conversations with them around it. This genius however was good at all of these. Amazing.
His passion for south indian cuisine, especially a well made vengaya sambar and potato roast was legendary. He talked about a meal prepared by my mom, in which both of those were featured, at our house in Chennai, every single time I met him. A few months ago, when we met him, he told Vanaja that I am going to come one of these days to Richmond, just to eat the vengaya sambar that you prepare.
Rest in peace mama. We are all going to miss you.

Mama was an amazing human being.
His love for science, music, Tamil, and for family and friends was unbound. It was also amazing that such a knowledgeable and well-read person remained a humble person.
His curiosity, reasoning, and search for a fix were well instilled in his sons. We have seen a few broken windows in BITS hostels because of that. It's never a dull moment when you are with anyone from the Srinivasan family.
Mama was such a sport for a serious looking dude. I still remember this incident. When we, Rajaji's classmates. were setting up the room for Rajaji's first night, we rounded up a few alarm clocks to go off every hour and hid them all over the room. When we turned around, we found Mama glaring at us. When we were trying to mumble what we were doing, he brought his hands forward - handing us two more alarm clocks he borrowed from the neighbors!
I didn't know his love for Tamil and writing for a long time. He used to quiz me for the perfect Tamil word for an English word he had in mind. And would not rest till we found the perfect word - he would not take a near perfect or approximate word. I am still stumped on translation for "God is a concept"! Whatever Tamil word I came up with, he would state the perfect English word for it. Needless to say, God and concept are still elusive to me. But he was clear on those things.
We used to have big get-togethers with our college friends and families and they all turn into big music festivals and group card games and Mafia. He used to write reviews for those events in English and Tamil. It was almost like reading The Hindu newspaper(when it was still good)
I had kept in touch with him thru emails for a while. I tried to get him to write on a blog. I had even set one up I think. But somebody(not sure me or somebody else) wrote about him in his profile which he thought was not true or didn't reflect who he is perfectly. He refused to do anything with that profile. Even removing that didn't help. He said that was wrong and there was no going back.
Finally - here is a post in Tamil I wrote after visiting him last year.

So long, mama. Rest in peace.

Most important of them all is to question and be curious and not just accept a belief. If I wake up everyday, happy to be doing what I do, it is in a large part due to the interest he had ignited in me. PVS Mama was very special to me personally. His unconditional love and affection for my father was amazing considering they hardly got to meet in person for over a decade. We shared a very special bond beyond being one of his best friend's daughter. He studied in my Alma mater, Madras Christian College. He not only majored in the same subject as I did, but his classmate was my Head of Department several decades later. He always almost greeted me asking how my father was and where he was, as my father is a frequent traveler. He loved to hear about my classroom experiences, loved whatever I cooked for him, and loved to hear from me about his beloved home town of Chennai and Kancheepuram. I have had nothing but pleasant memories of him - he had shared with me so many of his own with my father. He has indeed left a big void in all our lives. I could go on with his tremendous ability to hold conversations on any topic, his love of the people he cared so much about...but above all, for me, personally, his extraordinary affection for my father stands out. Mama, we are indeed blessed to have you in our lives. I will really miss you when I visit Kanna or Bharath's place..May your soul attain our HH Acharya's Thiruvadi..

Srinivasan mama was special to our family, not only because he was the father of our great friends Paddu, Sriram, Rajaji and Bharth, but also because he was a student of my late father Sri Devaraja Iyer. We informed mama that to commemorate our father’s milestone birthday, all of the family was jointly writing a collection notes of good wishes. Srinivasan mama enthusiastically asked if he could write one because my father was his favorite teacher. Thereupon, despite his poor eyesight and shaky hands, he wrote a beautiful and long note, which my father read and was greatly touched by it.
While Paddu and I practiced for my concerts in Dallas at Paddu’s house, mama would always come upstairs and quietly sit down and listen and would offer great encouragement at the end. Given his expertise in Carnatic music, I always considered it very valuable.
In many ways, mama and my father were alike. They both were educated during the era when students learned and internalized their fundamental concepts firmly, which gave them the confidence to speak with such authority on matters of their expertise. You always approached them with reverence. We will miss him greatly.
May I also take this opportunity to express my admiration for his boys (and their spouses) for taking such good and loving care of him till the end. God bless this beautiful family!

Since I was seeing chithiyaa and was with him almost every alternative day the last 8 months am to some extent satisfied that I had done something for him. But I cud not see appa till his last breath make my feelings harder to digest that words cud explain. But need to realise the reality.
I am writing this from the bottom of my heart. My personal message to Amma. Pls convey the message.
Though biologically i am your sister in law you had always kept me as your daughter in your heart. How true is this in the same way you are my mother and will continue to be till my last breath. You know me and my feelings better than anyone else and you have been seeing me right from my birth. Anna, you kanna, rajaji, paddu & bharath are always in our thoughts and mind . Chithi was the one human who suffered inside ( hope you definitely know her) without expressing her feelings outside. She had you all in her prayers daily by reading sundaragandam for each one of you till she fell to sub-conscious level for the last 4 days. During the last 4 days she wanted to see kanna. I still feel guilty that I cud not fulfil her last wish. Only when we all say kanna and call her patti she would open her eyes. Okay all over. I badly wanted to see Anna and got my canada visa 3 days back and planned to come to US. What to do?
Hope you really understand my feelings. You had been with me in every stage of my life from my child hood and had done a lot as a mother. Anna's loss is really making me feel so sad since I cud not see till his last breath. But reality stands first. Longing to see you all. I hv no words to twist. My feelings are so hard that words can explain. Keeping you all in my thoughts always.

PVS was a very good to many for more than five decades. He was a very fierce fighter among his friends for good cause. He was very helpful down . He has always helped people in his own way and has never failed to give his human approach to any problem given to him. His passing away has created a void difficult to be filled for many of us who had the privilege of moving with him for years. I have known mama ever since Paddu and I were classmates at Viveka. I have so many fond memories of mama....his breadth of knowledge cutting across so many disciplines and his ability to explain even complex t subjects in a simple way. His big heart and hospitality - always welcomed me as if I was a close family member, particularly when Paddu was not home and made me totally feel at ease. He was truly a great person and a human being and I have great many memories to cherish. May his soul rest in peace. God bless the Srinivasan family.

Our condolences on the passing of Srinivasan Mama. He will still be alive in our hearts and minds, and through us live on. A flood of childhood memories flow through me as I write this (as an unofficial resident of 24 UA) - Mama's strong personality, zest for life, helpful nature, keen intellect and ability to go deep into any subject, command of the English language (evident from the extensive Readers digest collection, British Council membership), interest in sport - countless Wimbledon, cricket matches together, and so on. He was particularly helpful to Appa over the course of decades. I was personally touched by his solicitous care to Appa when he was unwell in the year of his passing. We can only look back on all the good memories we were able to have and smile at the fact that you were able to have these.

I would like to recollect Bharath's dad's passion for Math and physics. Even at old age he remembered and was able to derive/explain Bessel and Legendre equations and its practical usage. A decade ago when a dish network guy was at Bharath's house to install a new antenna and wasn't sure whether the tree would affect the signal he took a sheet of paper and calculated the angle using Pythagoras theorem and asked the guy to adjust based on it. The guy was stunned. Great soul!

Even though you knew of your father's condition, nothing can prepare one for the loss of a parent. You have a big family and the support would make all the difference in the days to come. Of course one must find their emotional strength themselves.
I hope that your father's peaceful passing will help you come to terms with the loss easier.
