Otto,

Dear Kam and Allison,
Otto was gone from our sight about one year ago; but not from our heart.
Otto was remembered as a brother with a servant heart.
We remember seeing Otto’s face beaming with smiles in the Pre-K classroom. He would sit on the floor and assemble the train tracks for Jackson. He would hold Noah on his lap and put playdough into Noah’s hands to stop his crying. He would cheer while looking at Leo’s coloring: “Wow, I can’t believe it, Leo! Did you do it all by yourself?!”. He would crouch on the floor to tie shoelaces for Zack. And at the end of the class, he would carefully wipe the tables and toys.
We remember seeing Otto always staying after the worship service to stack up chairs. Otto spent time chaperoning youth fellowship and the retreats. Otto’s driving was part of Claire’s fond memory of watching Chris Tomlan’s concert.
We remember Otto serving with us in New Life Bible Camp. Otto was always thoughtful, and he volunteered to clean up the kitchen after the ladies finished cooking. After Otto got to know Weiming’s needs, Otto kept Weiming on his list and invited Weiming to play table tennis and to attend men’s retreat from time to time.
We remember seeing Otto decorating the classrooms on the Sunday afternoon before Vacation Bible School (VBS), and driving around to buy snacks for Evening Bible Camp and VBS.
Otto is remembered as a loving husband as he always stood beside Kam, smiling and waiting patiently while she and other ladies were talking.
Otto is remembered as a devoted father as he enthusiastically talked about Allison’s summer plan. After Claire and Christine attended Allison’s sixteenth birthday party, they were awed by how all the details were well taken care of by Otto and Kam.
Kam and Allison, it is our privilege to know your family and to witness how Otto blessed those around him immensely. We feel sorry about how much you must be missing Otto now. Greatly are we comforted that there will be no more tears or pain in your and our reunion with Otto in our Lord’s home.

I miss seeing Otto and talking to him in our cul de sac. A fond memory I have is of Otto, Kam, and other neighbors shoveling 3 feet of snow after the last blizzard we had. Even the snow plows got stuck on our street and to be shovelled out. Otto was a very kind and good person. Rest peacefully, Otto!

I am grateful to have Otto as my uncle. He was the true definition of a kind hearted person. Otto always made everyone feel important because he would drive all the way to New York to celebrate family member’s birthdays and achievements. My grandma would often tell me about how much she missed Otto because he was so nice and kind. Otto would take my grandma traveling around the world and even drove many hours to New York to pick her up instead of just buying her a plane or bus ticket so that she can visit Virginia to spend time with him, Aunt Kam and Alison.

Uncle Otto will be with me to make sure, in spirit & in heaven this time. We love grandma. It was fun to vacation with her. We are proud of your accomplishment. Keep up the good work. More importantly, we hope to see you established in a biblical church one day; Uncle Otto is also making sure of this in heaven too. Love you!

But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”!(Ecc 4:9-12)

I am so grateful to have worked alongside of Otto for many years! His intelligence, calming, caring and compassionate nature made him very easy to work with. On days where he didn't bring his lunch into work, he and I would go to our favorite local restaurants to enjoy some lunch and talk about sports, family and life. I learned a lot from Otto just by observing him. In particular, the way he gushed about his wife and daughter let me know how proud he was of them. To be honest, we developed such a genuine bond with each other to the point where I felt like I knew his family personally...even though I had never met them prior to his passing.
Otto, I am going to miss our sports debates and impromptu breaks during the work day to walk around the building and enjoy the nice weather.
Rest peacefully my friend, I will never forget you!! ❤

Happy Father’s Day Otto! Thank you for being one of the nicest, best human beings we ever gotten to know. You had inspired, encouraged, and help many many people with your kindness and the way you treat everyone were admirable. You only want what’s best for everyone. Your happiness comes from making others happy, you are truly one of a kind. Everyone who knows Otto has a special Otto’s story, and here is one of mine: Otto and Kam were the first family members I spoke to when I signed up for my first marathon, they were just as excited as I was, it was a very special moment. 7 months later, I remember driving over to their house with Sallie and the kids the Friday before the race, going to the expo and having dinner together that Saturday night, then at 4am, yes, 4am on Sunday, Otto drove me to the starting line, he wished me luck, told me to take my time and enjoy the race right before I got off the car. A few hours later, I had completed my first marathon with Otto, Kam, Sallie and the kids at the finish line waiting for me. I am truly thankful to have them there to share that special accomplishment with me, it is something I will cherish forever. What is special about Otto is he doesn’t just do things because he has to or think about what he will get in return, he does things because he wants to, because he cares about how he can make the other person better. Thank you for all that you done Otto!! Thank you Aunt Kam and Alison, I will continue to share my Otto’s stories with Jayden and Sophie

Time flies! For the first time I met my brother-in-law, Otto, we were in college. I still remembered my first impression of him was “why my sister Kam found a boyfriend with long hair?” At that time, I had an impression that most of the long hair men usually were gangsters. Thank God that time proved; he was not a gangster but a faithful Christian. When my father was very sick in the hospital a lady next room, who did not speak English, had Otto translate for her. The lady's husband had a stomach cancer. Otto had some conversation with her and introduced God to her and told her to pray. PTL! I felt touched that Otto could catch the very moment to proclaim the gospel.

I said time may run out soon, referring to my own little health issue. That summer he helped me fulfill my dream. It ended up this is the one mission trip in a poor country in his life time! It was a meaningful trip! I did not think Alison would want to go with us as she would just start the internship at NG. Out of my surprise she said she will ask for the time off as soon as we asked her. Thank God for allowing it to happen! It was a wonderful graduation gift for Alison too.

Kam and Allison - I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the time I had to get to know Otto and walk with him in this life. He was always so encouraging, genuinely interested in how I was and my family, openly sharing his struggles while also encouraging me in mine. I was blessed to have known him and am a better man for it. I pray the Lord's comfort to you on the anniversary of his passing. In Christ, Dave

On this one year anniversary, I remember the gentle, humble man who loved his Savior and his family above all else. I love this verse that reminds us that when Otto left this earth He awoke in the presence of Jesus and now Otto is "satisfied." He is without pain and is completely healed.
Kam and Alison, I pray that you are comforted with this knowledge and the knowledge that you will see Otto again in heaven. May the sweet memories of your life spent together bring you joy, and may you fully experience the comfort of God on this one year anniversary. 2 Corinthians 1:3

You and Dave came replaced the convertible burnt light bulbs in the hard to find areas and being available to help anytime certainly contributed to my survival. In talking to Kam, I see how close they were.
Otto's illness drew them closer together.
Surely they will be together in Paradise.

Thanks Ms. Carolyn. I remember that one time Otto gave you a ride. He put down the top of his convertible because he thought it would be hard for you to crawl in and out of a two doors car with the low top. He is a very thoughtful and caring person. Have a good trip to Middle Sping. Praying for your good week there. Thanks for the special quilt you made for Otto and me too.

I had forgotten about that ride. He was surely a very kind person. I read most of the tributes that were posted. It takes a courageous and thoughtfull person to be that kind to all people. What an example to follow.

It has been two years, Otto and Kam joined us to visit Lucas in VT for his first birthday away from home! You two made that 8 hours round trip driving more easier and relaxing and enjoyable! Thanks for helping to drive and keeping us company! Your treat to Lucas, made his "away home birthday" more special and memorable!

My friend Otto has made heaven a happier place!
Otto was a naturally joyful man and a very good man. He laughed easily and loved his family dearly. He adored Kam and his daughter, Alison. He was so very proud of Alison.
I knew Otto and his family for many years, as they live in our neighborhood and our daughters were good friends (they also overlapped at a couple of schools). Whenever the weather was reasonably good, Otto and Kam would walk in our neighborhood, always hand in hand. They would often stop by my house to chat. I always welcomed those impromptu encounters, as they were always full of joy and hearty laughter.
I will always have fond memories of Otto. I am also confident that his faith, love and joyful nature will continue to inspire his family as well as many others.
With Respect and Love,
Alex and Family

At this time of remembrance of Otto my thoughts are at the wonderful kind person Otto was. His sweet smile greeting me as I came into church is something to cherish. I loved Otto Yu! He was an important part of our Wednesday night Men’s Group. I was impressed by his kindness and thoughtfulness. What an incredible joy it was to have him, Kam, and Allison along on a mission trip to Guatemala. Otto and Kam ran the sterilization department liked a well-oil machine, and Allison was a wonderful dental assistant. It was great having their family serving the Lord with us! I miss Otto’s friendship, but am thankful that it will continue throughout all eternity because Jesus took all our sin upon Himself on the cross.

Amen! Thank You God for taking our sins upon Yourself so that we don’t have to perish and suffer eternally! We will see Otto standing or sitting next to Jesus. I look forward to that day.
Dr. Grieco, The Guatemala trip was so much fun. Otto had two rounds of every delicious meal at the El Faro. Although we looked at their teeth most of the time people there were beautiful. I really wish I can speak Spanish after the trip. Before that happens learning the names of most dental tools will do.

Time really flies. I can’t believe it will be a year this Sunday. Our families spent so much time together when our daughters are young. We had bible study on Fridays. We biked and played ball games after Chinese School on Sundays. We barbecued on Memorial Days; watched fireworks on July 4th; cruised in summer; hiked in fall; skied in winter. We spent a lot time in Burke Lake, New Life Bible Camp, Seven Springs and each other’s houses. He was always energetic and enthusiastic no matter what kind of activities we were doing. I remember his red face sweating with a big smile when he was cooking at the grill. I recall he patrolled and made sure everyone was safe on the ski trail. The image of he fell into the water from the Jet-ski when we were at Myrtle Beach still in my memory. He will always be remembered. And we will meet again in heaven.

Regina, Come to think about it. The parents among the families were like siblings who played, laughed, studied the Bible and sometimes fought. Most importantly, we grew together. Our kids were like cousins. PTL! Otto goes to Heaven sooner than the rest of us. We will find him there later to continue the good time.

While I was adding refrigerant to my car two weeks ago, I thought of Otto. He actually taught me how to do it years ago and every summer, I would stop by his house to refill refrigerant when my old van needed to recharge the A/C. Not to mention that he always had the coolant refill ready for me. Otto was the kind of guy that always extended his helping hands whenever we needed help.

We remember a cold wintery day meeting the YU family. Alison was just born and they moved here from NYC. From that moment we all became family friends. Otto and Ron would often be outside sharing stories while mowing the lawn in the summer or shoveling snow in the winter. As the years went by, whenever Otto saw us he would always stop to ask “how is Alexis and Marcus?” And time would quickly pass as we talked about all the children - his and ours. We miss you dear friend.

Otto, we've only known each other for a few years but I'll always remember your laughter and contagious smile on the tennis court. I still think fondly of the times after several hours playing that we would talk of family, kids, life's ups and downs and whatever catching up we needed to do. Your time here was too short but the measure of a life is its effects on others, and I know I'm a better person for having known you. Thank you for your patience on the tennis court, you smiles at my corny jokes, and your sympathetic ear during our post game rap sessions. My friend you will be missed but never forgotten. Otto is a true leader. In our church tennis circle, he is always the person who gather us together for a Sunday afternoon tennis play. He coordinates a time good for everyone, informs us the weather, finds us an open court.
Otto is a fun person, optimistic, always has smile on his face. People just want to be around him.
Otto, you will be sorely missed from your friends.

Otto, my bro, thanks for being a wonderful friend and brother to me. I will not forget the moment we spent together playing tennis, going bowling, hiking, enjoying good food, and just chit chatting. Although at times i got annoyed by you teasing me, but those are all precious moments that I will cherish.
I know we will meet some day in heaven, and until then, take care and indulge yourself in the love of God!

We are deeply sorry to learn of Otto's passing and would like to express our dearest condolence!
Not only Otto has been a dear friend. He is fondly remembered as a brother in Christ! Otto and I became close when we met in the CBC Men's Fellowship/study/seminar one year not long after we started attending CBC. He also invited me to attend the Men's Retreat the same year. I will never forget how Otto took the time to guide me along throughout the Men's Retreat; with my low vision problem, I was not able to navigate at the facility especially during the night time. Throughout the years and through our times of sharing in our fellowship small group, I really appreciate Otto's lay back attitude and his closeness to his family (Kam and Allison).
Otto, you have left us much too soon and I truly regret that we did not have more time to have fellowship with each other. We will miss you very much! God Bless You!

The whole Simon family (Helen, Steven, Jafeth, and Luke) will surely miss Otto. But we are grateful for the opportunity to get to know him. He was a great man and a friendly one. The word "humble" has been mentioned several times about him, and that is the truth. We first met him in the early days of the "Cantonese group" at Chantilly Bible Church, when our two sons were very small. He was our friend ever since. We have a lot of memories of him - such as, of eating in a restaurant with him and Kam, of staying in their home for a few days one summer (during our vacation in America while we were living in China), and of so many activities and Bible studies with them and the rest of the Cantonese group. We miss Otto and look forward to seeing him again someday in heaven.

This was supposed to be the eulogy I prepared for Otto’s memorial service. Since I won’t have a spot in the service to say it, I am posting it.
"It has been a long time since my last time I stood on this podium at CBC. Could not imagine that the next time I was up here is to deliver a eulogy for Otto, whom we know for almost two decades. CBC was where our two families first met and where our daughters, Alison Yu and Melody Wong grew up together. The so-called “good old days” had a lot of fond memories: riding jet skis in a thunderstorm down in Mertle Beach, SC, skiing down the slopes in 7 Springs, still remember the scene when Alison got stuck in the Avalanche Slope and “rescued” by the ski patrols, going up to Sugar Loaf Mountain in MD, and picking cherries and berries. At one point, together with a big group of Cantonese families, we had dinner every Saturday, explored all the large and small Chinese restaurants in the DMV region. Otto liked to play Mahiong and he was a very skillful play (don’t dare to judge us – we never played with money and we were not obsessed with it – so-called “healthy mah jong”). Otto was very good. He knew how to play offense and defense – he could figure out what you want to “eat” in the game.
For some of us, the hours we spent on the tennis court might be the most memorable. Literally, Otto brought me to tennis, and I was not compatible. Surely, he enjoyed the single games with Yuan Spade, who cannot be here due work-related travel. Their hits back-and-forth were very exciting to watch. Partnering with Otto in double was always enjoyable – he never blamed me even my play was lousy. For some of us, we also have memorable moments in Otto’s basement playing ping pong (during winter when playing tennis can be unbearable).
Otto had attended Catholic Church for a long time, but he is also a Christian. We have to wait until the day we return to God’s heaven to resume our games."

Otto was a fun person, from NASCAR and monster truck races, to flying kites (on national kite festival) and helping to fix the car, Otto brought so much joy to our family.
Otto was so happy when he found out Lucas(his God son) became a HOKIE! Otto and Kam went to VT to visit Lucas on his first birthday in VT, they treated him a nice lunch, and shared their experience about VT with Lucas. Otto had so much good memories about VT because Alison was there for three years. Otto were a very caring person. Lucas is lucky to have him as his God father!
Otto was a very supportive person. After Lucas was born, we invited Otto to be his God father. Since then, Otto was there for Lucas' baptism, first communion, confirmation! Otto was there with Lucas for all his important religious milestones! Otto was a very faithful person!
Our deepest condolences to Kam and Alison during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Otto, you will always be in our memory!

“A good heart has stopped beating; a good soul ascended to heaven.”
When Otto sent an encouraging message to another cancer patient in early Jun, saying “Let us walk thru the journey together with heart and strength”, we had strong faith that he was ready to fight this battle. Amazing how a person – especially in his condition – can still be able to provide positive energy to others.
Even no longer physically present on earth, we know that Otto is watching over his family and friends who remember his wonderful and gentle soul. He remains in our image as one of the “old cakes” of our “Peach Blossom Club”. After the tears have dried and the goodbyes have been said, all we have is happy memories.
Our most sincere condolences sent with love and remembrance,

This is my second time to share at a memorial service recently. It is always a mixed feeling to speak during a memorial service. Obviously, you are closed to the person that is why you are saying a few words to commemorate his/her life. It is sad and my heart is heavy because I miss this person. At the same time, you are happy for the person. Last time, I was speaking at my own mother’s memorial service.

Here is the reason that I am happy for Otto. Please look at the program in your hand. “Celebrating Otto Yu’s Joy in Going Home” . The Chinese version is more impactful in my option. It laterally translates to “Happiness of Otto’s relocation”. Please read the bottom of this page (Revelation 21:4) Otto is relocating to a place where there is NO pain No sorrow – a very beautiful place.

My memory of our dear brother went back a long way. I started to know Otto when our church started the Cantonese fellowship in 1999. There were a lot of young kids in those days, some of them were not even party-trained.. Alison was a toddler then. The youngest of these young kids graduated from college this year. My interaction with Otto was not frequent. Nevertheless, the impressions that he made are long lasting. And I will explain.

I think that it has to do with his name, Otto, the letter “O”. Alison mentioned that her father is very observant. I would like to add another dimension to this letter “O”. Obedient. Yes, Obedient. The question is obedient to whom. John 13:34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Otto was obedient to his Savior.

Gentlemen – how many of you (me included) can expect a statement like this from our spouse after we are gone.”

I should add that Otto was a good friend and a wonderful brother in Christ.
Otto loved and cared about his family, his sister, his parents and his in-laws. He enjoyed cooking good foods for his family; he took his in-laws for vacation. He also loved and cared about the church family members. I learnt from another family that Otto would always made himself available when they needed help.

I mentioned earlier that my interaction with Otto was not frequent but long lasting impression. About a year ago, Otto found out that I was driving to take my wife to women Bible study on Wednesday night and had to wait for about two hours. He called me and suggested that we should hang out. We did for a couple of times. We spent the whole two hours at a Starbucks nearby and the Starbucks closed and we went to Harris Teeter.

He shared his thought and desire about Christian Brother fellowship; and his excitement and passion about the short-term mission trip with Dr. Joe. We had great time. More importantly for me, I felt loved and cared by a Christian brother. Later, I invited him to join the breakfast meeting with a couple of brothers. Otto came joyfully even though he did not normally wake up for six o’clock breakfast.

We enjoyed the fellowship with him. One of the brother said that Otto is one of the sweetest persons he ever met. This man has met a lot of people.
I properly run over my allotted time. I am trying to say that Otto truly manifested his obedient to the Lord by expressing love to people around him in action.
In closing, I would like to quote a statement that Pastor Milt shared with Kam. Our separation with Otto is only temporary. We will see him again. It is the promise of our Lord. Ty!

Brother Otto, a faithful and loving brother in Christ. We met Otto and Kam at the Chantilly Bible Church (CBC) for several years. We had fun playing ping-pong with Otto at his home. For many occasions, we attended Sunday Bible Study together and shared testimonies at CBC. Although Otto is gone, we’ll remember his laughers forever. We know Otto is with Jesus in heaven and we’ll join Otto in one day.
- “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
- Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
- For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

I came to know more about Otto from reading all the condolences and memories that friends and families posted here. What a beloved husband, father, son, son-in-law, co-worker, cousin, ....and a faithful and loving brother in Christ!
I remember one time I needed someone in the very last minute to sub for my kid’s Sunday school duty and Otto jumped right in to help without hesitation! Although his passing went like a swift wind, we take comfort in knowing that he is now resting in the arms of our Lord. Brother Otto is gone from the sight, but surely would never from the hearts of his loved ones.
My heartfelt sympathy to Kam and Alison. May our Lord strengthen and comfort you during this time of grief.

I have known Otto for a long time and he was a great friend of our family.
Otto was one of the kindest persons I have ever met. We used to play tennis together during summers and play ping pong in each others' basement during winters. Whenever our family needed help, he was always there. When I went back to Hong Kong visiting my parents, he always checked with us to make sure that our family was fine.
I still remember the time when we went to a camping trip in Maryland and we had trouble setting up the camp. Otto was the first one to offer help. When my car needed to add Freon or coolant, he always told me to come to his house right the way to help me with it.
The last time I met him was in January. He was excited going back to Hong Kong to spend time with his dad during the Chinese New Year. I would never have expected that, it was the last time that I ever saw him.
I will always remember Otto. My deepest condolences to Kam and Alison.

During his college years at RPI at Troy, NY, he got to know a group of friends of 14, which they called themselves the “Plum Flower Group-桃花會”. The group name was a changed version of a group in a famous Chinese novel (by 金庸)called “Red Flower Group-紅花會”. The name was changed because they thought one of his best friends, Edmond Wong, who was the oldest in the group had eyes like plum flowers. He had a lot of fond memories during his undergraduate college years and had always shared funny stories with Kam and Alison.
