Allow me to express my sympathy and condolences to all of the family, and others, who knew Dick Lyons. He was one of the most personable men I knew and did his utmost to instill integrity and patriotism in other members of the reserve units. I served with him during the '70's and early '80's in the reserve units in Washington, DC and Alexandria, VA. Knowing him as I did, you have lost a great family member and the Coast Guard has lost a most loyal "Coastie". Nothing will replace him but his memory shall live forever in our hearts.

Pop, well, I have to say that I've learned the "right path to life" from your teachings. Although I didn't always follow them, I remember them. You were always my # 1 fishing & hunting buddy. We had some great times out in the woods & fields of VA & WV (turkey, deer, & bird hunting). We had some great fishing trips in VA, VT, & where-ever we happened to stop on our hundreds of camping trips all around the states. I have to thank you for your guidance, your "tough love", your patience & understanding. I also have to thank you for the way you taught me to take responsibility for my actions. I joined the Army to impress you, to make you see me in a different light. I felt like I earned your respect when I joined. You showed that by coming to my basic training graduation in your uniform (God, saluting my own Dad was a different experience). You came to visit me in Germany, oh we had a blast !!! I remember when I was at the Pentagon & you were at Coast Guard HQ in DC...we used to call eachother & talk all the time, then set up lunch visits. You taught me the "rights & wrongs" of hunting, gun safety, etc. I couldn't imagine EVER going on those kinds of hunting trips (from about age 12) without you. I was so happy, as I got older, to offer you the same kinds of trips. I know you had your time with all of us, as different as the activities may have been, I will never forget & will always cherish the camping, hunting, & fishing that we did together...EVER ! Nothing made me happier than having my Dad there when I : hit my first home run, played football with him in the stands, joined the Army, had him at my Basic Training graduation, had my Dad visit me in Germany, got my first big buck (with him there), brought home my (2) turkeys, us competing during a fishing trip like a couple of kids, visiting you guys in VT, and the overall pride of being your son. You are the best father I could have ever dreamed of, let alone actually had. You were tough, you were straight-up serious, and even though I thought you were "mean" at times, I grew to figure out, it was all to show me how real life was going to be. For that, I thank you. My Pop, my hunting & fishing buddy, my friend...I love you, I miss you, and with any luck, I will see you again. Please take care of Mom & Meg. I love you all & miss you.
